That’s because this time we honor an II -year-old named Josh Cohen. Josh volunteers every other Sunday at the Jewish Home. In fact, he’d be there every Sunday but on alternate ones he’s with his own grandparents. Fellow dedica ted volunteer Mollie Firestone raved about Josh, saying, “He’s so great at I I; just imagine when he grows older.” His mother Cissy adds, “Josh is like the Boy Scout who’s ready and waitingto help someone cross the street. He gravitates toward helping others.” The “others” that Josh helps include anyone and everyone at the Jewish Home. No generation gap exists for this kind, loving boy who greets each resident with a smile. Josh wonders, though, why many people find themselves unable to work with the elderly. However, Josh admitted, “1 was scared, too, the first time I went up to the third floor, but 1 got used to the people. In many ways they’re just like eve rybody else. They’re human beings like me and you. 1 just give them some happiness when I’m here and that really makes me feel good.” And “giving happiness” puts it mildly. Residents’ face light up when they see Josh’s winning smile. As he passes them, they reach out and kiss his hand or adoringly pat him. In response, Josh welcomes their love, giving them a hug or warm greeting. Josh Cohen: Always ready to help others. During Sunday’s feeding time. Josh helps in any way he can. He feeds the residents, butters their bread, cuts their meat or any job that helps. Josh fondly speaks of his friendship with resident Mr. Cantor who taught him to play chess. When I asked Josh who wins, he smiled and said, “Some times Mr. Cantor slips on purpose and lets me win.” He added, “I U U LOVE” AND UNDERSTANDING” TWO WORDS THAT ARE OUR FOUNDATION AND OUR PLEDGE While undoubtedly KING SPRINGS VILLAGE Health Care Center provides the finest nursing facilities in the South, our goal is to make our residents comfortable, happy, and secure by providing the ultimate in professional care and a wide range of social and recreational programs. His devotion to helping others is as innate as his sweet smile. When I asked Josh who had inspired him he beamed and ans wered, “my mom.” This is easily understood because every time Josh is volunteering, his kind and loving mother is right beside or nearby doing the same. This mother/son combination touches everyone they meet since it is clear that each is as dedicated as the other. When 1 spoke to Josh’s mom, l asked what she’s done to teach Josh and nurture these values. She answered, “1 never forced him. He showed the enthusiasm and we fos tered it. We’ve always encouraged Josh to be kind, helpful and po lite.’ Mom Cissy added, “1 converted to Judaism and truly believe that Judaism is action. Without action, you have nothing. If people became more involved in helping with their children, their children would be more willing.” Cissy and husband Bruce teach Josh many values. He helps save for things in their household pushke. For toys per haps, you might think. Not so for Josh. Instead he saves to prepare for a special dessert. For him, per haps? Wrongagain. Josh also helps his mom at The Temple’s shelter for the homeless. Josh said, “They love it when Mom fixes a home- cooked meal, so I get her to fix dessert, too. Josh loves helping there, talking to the people, setting the table or any job that is asked of ( ontinued next page. Photo bv Harold Alan
