Lautenberg, Grassley and other
senators had asked Attorney Gen
eral Edwin Meese to consider Ara
fat’s indictment for the murders of
C'leo Noel, U.S. Ambassador to
the Sudan, and Charge d’Affaires

sador Guy Eid was shot with the
two Americans. Eight Palestinian
gunmen of the PLO’s Black Sep
tember division seized them at a
reception in the Saudi Arabian
Embassy in Khartoum. Investiga
tors of the murders, including
Charles Lichtenstein, former U.S.
ambassador to the United Nations,
unearthed what they believed was
authentic information on a tape
recording that indicated Arafat at

years persuading the first-chair
musicians of Eastern European
and German orchestras, who had
lost their jobs as a result of the rise
of Nazism, to emigrate to Palestine.
The Palestine Symphony played
its first concert on Dec. 26, 1936,
under the baton of Arturo Tosca

the birth of this orchestra was a
way to demonstrate his opposition
to Eascism.
Since then, major soloists and
conductors have performed with

of Israel and helping maintain the
highest artistic standards of the
orchestra.
The orchestra’s role as Israel’s
greatest cultural ambassador is
more than matched by the effect of
its performances on audiences in
Israel, where concerts are routinely

policy within the administration in

Late news
At a hearing of the Senate
subcommittee on terrorism
Wednesday, both Sen. Lauten
berg and Sen. Grassley blasted
the Department of Justice for
its decision not to pursue the
Arafat indictment.
Assistant Attorney General
John Bolton wrote the Senate that
the U.S. lacked legal jurisdiction
and sufficient evidence against
Arafat. Bolton said that although
much has been alleged about evi
dence implicating Arafat in plan
ning the takeover of the Saudi
Arabian Embassy to murder Am
bassador Noel and Charge Moore,
the evidence currently available
from key departments and agen
cies within our government and
from other sources is insufficient
for prosecutive purposes.

cert in Israel, called it “one of the
most moving moments of my life”
and said it is vital for the American
community to help build the en
dowment.
Because the orchestra does not
receive any substantial govern
ment subsidy and until now had a
very small endowment fund, many
special programs and projects
could not be covered from the reg
ular operating budget. The Atlanta
benefit and others like it around
the country are expected to en
hance the endowment fund to keep
the IPO in the front ranks of musi
cal excellence.
“In view of our legal conclu
sions that there is a U.S. constitu
tional prohibition against indict
ing anyone for these murders, un
dertaking an exhaustive global
search for additional detailed evi
dence of Arafat’s complicity in the
1973 murders would divert pre
cious investigative resources which
we must devote to locating and
apprehending those responsible
for terrorist attacks in cases where
we do have jurisdiction,” the letter
said. It referred to the hijackings of
the Achille Lauro and the Egyp
tian and TWA airliners.
I he Justice Department’s con
tention that search for evidence
against Arafat “would divert pre
cious investigatible resources" was
felt by knowledgeable sources here
to be strikingly similar to views
held at the State Department and
by others in World War 11 when
appeals were made to the Roos
evelt administration to bomb the
rail lines leading to Auschwitz and
other death camps to save some of
the inmates. At that time, U.S.
officials held that the resources
needed to be used for such bomb
ings were required for other pur
poses in the war.
Public announcement of the con
cert will be forthcoming soon with
ticket prices for the remaining
seats announced at that time. Invi
tations for the $125 choice seats to
benefit the endowment fund and
including the gala reception will be
mailed in June. However, anyone
interested in reserving tickets
early, or getting more information,
can call 262-5006, Monday through
Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
