German film classic
to be shown at Emory
On Monday and Tuesday even
ings, April 28 and 29, Parts 1 and 2
respectively of the German film
“Geschwister Oppermann” (The Op-
permanns) will be shown at 8 p.m.
in room 205 White Hall, Emory
University. Director Egon Monk
will be present both evenings to
introduce his film and answer ques
tions.
The film is based on Lion Feuch-
twanger’s 1933 novel, and became
a television event and received
many awards, among them Ger
many’s most prestigious, the “Adolf
Grimme Prize” in Gold, and a
Gold Medal at the 1983 Interna
tional Film and Television Festival
in New York.
Monk recreates Jan. 30,
1933, the day of Hitler’s “Machter-
greifung” (seizure of power). Monk
restricts his film to the closed
world of the Jewish upper class. In
three narratives which go through
the entire two part film he des
cribes the same terrible mechanism:
Naziism invading the sheltered, cul
tivated, bourgeois world.
The two-part series is co-spon-
sored by the Goethe Institute, the
Emory Center for International
Studies, Department of Modern
Languages, Theater Department
and the Hillel Federation.
In German with English sub
titles, the series is free and open to
the public. For further informa
tion call 727-6562.
