Program to explore effects of Holocaust on U.S. Jews In one terrible stroke, the Holo caust destroyed European Jewry and shifted the center of Jewish life, thereby transforming the role of the American Jewish commun ity. The memory of the Holocaust has served as both a constraint and an inspiration to American Jewish life and culture and has played a major role in shaping American Jewish identity. “After the Holocaust: American Jewish Identity,” will explore these issues on Tuesday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m., at the Atlanta Historical So ciety. The program is the first in a five-part public symposium, “Jew ish Renewal in the Post-Modern World,” being co-sponsored by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and the Atlanta Jewish Federation. The symposium will feature two well-known Jewish scholars. Dr. Daniel Jeremy Silver, rabbi of The Temple in Cleveland, Ohio, will be the guest speaker for the evening. Silver is also adjunct professor of religion, Case Western Reserve University and at Cleveland State University. He is also the author of several books on Judaism, includ ing “I mages of Moses” and “A His tory of Judaism, Volume 1.” The respondent. Dr. Sidra Ezrahi, is a visiting assistant professor of Jud aic Studies and Comparative Liter ature at Duke University. She is the author of “By Words Alone: Daniel Silver The Holocaust in Literature.” Chair man for the evening is Gerald Cohen, president of the Atlanta Jewish Federation. Edward Elson, program chair man of the Atlanta symposium, says forthcoming events will ex plore the effects of the establish ment of the State of Israel, the trend toward acculturation, and the revival of Jewish identity have had on contemporary Jewish life in America. The Atlanta symposium is part of a nationwide series of public programs entitled “Creativ ity and Continuity: Jewish Culture in America,” planned to celebrate the National Foundation for Jew ish Culture’s 25th anniversary.
