Year-round effort is pivotal
in alleviating child abuse
by Vida Goldgar
tiff lama Emmft ®ablf.
Officially, April was National
Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Throughout the state, a “Safe at
Home” public awareness campaign
sponsored by the Georgia Council
on Child Abuse received wides
pread cooperation. This ranged
from the Atlanta Braves’ “Safe at
Home Night” at the stadium, to
grocery store ads and bag imprints
to special programs in schools,
churches and synagogues. There
were even public appearances by
Marvel Comics’ “Spider-Man,”
who, in a special comic book pro
duced on the subject, reveals that
he was a victim of child abuse and
emphasizes the need to tell some
one.
The awareness campaign was
chaired by Margery Greenberg of
Atlanta, a Georgia Council on
Child Abuse board member and
volunteer.
Though Child Abuse Preven
tion Month is over, public aware
ness is a year-round necessity. Last
year in Georgia, there were over
26,000 new cases of child abuse.
And those were only the reported
cases. Experts agree that four out
of five abuse cases go unreported.
No race, religion, ethnic group
or economic strata is free of the
problem of abuse. Child abusers —
whether inflicting physical, emo
tional or sexual abuse -are usually
ordinary people caught in situa
tions beyond their control. At least
one study shows that violence
occurs in Jewish families to the
same extent as in non-Jewish
families.
In addition to support groups
for parents and children, the GCCA
provides helpline information and

crisis counseling, a program to

lies, including personal safety skills
for children; incest survivor groups

The kev words that need to be
communicated to abused children,
according to Mrs Greenberg, are
“It’s okay to tell.”
