Partly from the power of communal action; Israel as a com munity forms a perfect single body. Here the entire congregation of Israel gathered together to hear the command “Be holy," thereby vouch safing each individual the power and the merit (z’chus) of commu nal action. C habad ol (ieoigia The command; Be holy (i.e. dis tinct, sanctified, Kadosh). Addressed to; All the congrega tion of the Children of Israel. The reason; For /, G-d. your G-d. am hole. * * * The command "Be holy" means that we are to practice self-control ev en in the area of the permissible. Although the Torah does not warn elsewhere against superfluous lux uries and does not prohibit them, we are exhorted in this verse to maintain a clean, pure conduct and to abstain from extravagant indul gence even in matters that are “Kosher." But let us he honest. Let us make a sincere accounting of where we stand in regard to fulfilling the explicit Mit/vot of The Torah, es pecially the fine details of obser vance spelled out for us by the Sages. For most of us the situation is far from perfect. Since this is the case should not the command "Be Holy" be reserved for those few saintly individuals who have reached perfection in Mitzvot ob servance? The rest of us, simple mortals, should we not be happy if we observe all the explicit prohibi tions in Torah? No; forthecommand isaddressed to all the congregation of..Israel without exception. The reason given for the command is "because I. G-d, your G-d. am holy" a rea son that, obviously, applies to all of us, for each and every person was told at Sinai "1 am G-d. your G-d.” collectively and individually, and how are we to get strength to sanctify ourselves (even) “with that which is permitted to you" when we find even ordinary observance American Red Cross We’ll help.W ill you? rm a p 0 c"c Serv ce o* T *'S Newspaper Svla 9, T »-.e Aq,e'*'S>ng Counoi 1 academic assistance program * Professional, Individualized Assistance All Levels, In: English Comp. • Reading Comprehension Study Skills • Organizational Skills Basic Math • Pre-Algebra • Algebra Geometry • SAT Prep Mon. —Sun.
