The evening is being hosted by the
Community Development Committee
of the Atlanta Jewish Federation.
In a debate format, the emo
tional issues surrounding the Arab/
Israeli conflict will be examined
and explained from both sides. Dr.
Allen M. Emerson, professor of
international law at Indiana Uni
versity, will present the Arab view
point. Representing the Israeli
point of view will be Alan Gold
stein, partner: Dutton Kappes &
Overman law firm and member of
the Indianapolis Jewish Commun-
nity Relations Council.
“The program has been planned
as part of the Atlanta Jewish Fed
eration’s attempt to reach out to
Atlanta’s expanding Jewish popu
lation,” said Lois Blonder, chair
man of the Community Develop
ment Committee. The committee’s
initial focus is on Jewish residents
of Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Rosw ell
and East Cobb.
Additional events are being
planned to familiarize residents,
especially newcomers, in those areas
with the services available in At
lanta’s Jewish community. The Com
munity Committee has alsocreated
a Speaker’s Bureau, and will be
establishing a “volunteer clearing
house” to facilitate involvement in
the Jewish community.

‘enough already’ in Israel

Raphael Schneller, who has been
researching body language in Israel
for many years, has concluded that
all new immigrants, particularly
Ethiopians, risk being misunder-

In a recent study of Ethiopian
immigrants, Schneller found that
the “hand push,” which means
“leave me alone” to an Israeli is a
friendly greeting to an Ethiopian.
The “hand flick,” which means
“enough already” to an Israeli,
means “1 love you” to a newcomer
from Ethiopia.
“They should be taught our ges
tures and given the chance to ask
what they mean, in order to avoid
misunderstandings,” Schneller said.
“But we must also learn what their
gestures mean, anct we are nou
