Benveniste Special to I he Southern Israelite All the boys just called him “Sam,” and he served as a frater nity adviser tor Tau Epsilon Phi, Mu chapter at Emory University for over 35 years. All the fraternity hoys, in those days, were generally between 18-22 years of age. Sam Bredow was more than an adviser... Sam was a teacher, a counselor, a consultant, a financial adviser, a mentor, and a friend to literally thousands of “boys” now scattered all over the United States. Sam began his adviser years when his daughter. Sherry Bredow Maz- iar was sweetheart. He concluded his tenure upon his death, 35 years later. He gave freely of his time. He never asked to be honored, but the boys honored him by calling him and wanting to see him whenever they came through Atlanta. He was inv ited to their weddings, office openings, and special family occa sions. They came to Emory for undergraduate school. Most of them came to learn how to be doc tors, dentists, accountants, attor neys, and entrepreneurs. Sam taught them how to treat people, how to be community leaders, and how to do it one way—right. He “fathered” and “brothered” them all through school. The boys re sponded eagerly to his guidance. Sam was quiet about it. and yet, they knew he meant business. One of “Sam’s boys,” now a pro fessional in Atlanta recalls the night he told Sam he had just gotten into professional school at Emory, but didn’t have a dime to pay tuition. Sam took the young boy home from a fraternity meeting and told him he would lend him the tuition money under three conditions: No Florida -s Best Spa Value ' *The Great Rate” *50/Day s ana" For A Continuous 14 Nite Stay You get all these Spa extras for the price of an “ordinary” hotel room “America’s Most Affordable Spa” 3 nutritionally balanced meals daily Massages Nutritionist Weight loss plans Sauna & steam Swimming pools Water exercises Free tennis Golf (available) Facials • Herbal Wraps In room cable and HBO Day and evening activities including: bingo, dance classes, dinner dancing & shows CTJ Lart ^ skmrs Call for 7 naroor Information & Reservations !slandRva 1-800-SPA-SLIM Sam Bredow one would ever know he lent the student tuition money; he would pay it back INTEREST TREE; and he could take as long as he needed to pay the debt back. The “boy" shook hands, graduated from professional school with honors, and paid Sam Bredow back every penny, gladly. He said, “l am a professional today partly because Sam Bredow believed in me and was willing to help me make it financially. 1 owe a debt of grati tude to Sam Bredow. Another one of “Sam’s boys” remembers that Sam Bredow was the second person he called when he passed his CPA exam. His folks got the first call. “Sam was so proud of me. He was so happy to hear that I passed that exam. He always gave us pride in doing what was right, what was good and what was kind. He had a terrific sense of humor, too.” Sam Bredow and his wife, Bessie, opened their home to all the T au Epsilon Phi boys for 35 years. They knew each by name, and both kept in close touch with many of the graduates. Sam Bredow was a bridge builder. “He taught the boys to give real service, not lip service,” one man recalls. “He gave from his heart, not because he had to but because he wanted to. That was the kind of guy he was to all of us,” he adds. Sam Bredow had that warm touch, that sense of humor that disarmed and relaxed you, and he was so positive about a young man’s potential. He was more than an advisor. He was the Sam that made everybody around him feel good. In memory of Sam Bredow, Emory University is setting up a perpetual award in his memory. The Sam Bredow Memorial Devel opment Fund. This scholarship award will go to a second-year Emory student who has completed two successive semesters at Emory University and who is a member of Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity, Mu Chapter (Emory University). Criteria for the scholarship will be based on what Sam Bredow valued the most—service. The re cipient must have excelled in ser vice to the fraternity, scholarship, and service to the community. Emory University will administer the scholarship along w ith an advi sory board of people intimately involved with Emory. The Sam Bredow award will be endowed with $50,000 through contributions. Those who wish to contribute in memory of Sam Bredow can make their checks payable to: The Sam Bredow Mem orial Development Fund. Send checks c/o Emory University, At lanta, Ga., 30322.
