HE CENTER'S IPOTH
News from the Atlanta Jewish Community Center, Inc.
From
Mike Lainoff
Assistant Executive Director.
The Lights of a Thousand Campfires
A quarter of a century ago, one of the “deans” of
camping in America wrote a book called, “The Lights of a
Thousand Campfires.” In his book, the author shares
warm memories of campers and staff and the impact that
camping had on the lives of all those who were involved.
Over this same quarter-century, the Atlanta Jewish
Community Center has served thousands upon thou
sands of children, youth, adults and senior adults in its
various camping programs. Camping is such an intensive
living and learning experience, for all ages, that the Cen
ter considers camping as one of its highest priority
services.
The Center’s six major camping programs are:
CAMP K’TON—a pre-school summer camp, held lar
gely in the out-of-doors, staffed by trained early child
hood educators.
AJECOMCE DAY CAMP—serving children between
the ages of 5 and 13 years in a variety of programs on the
AJECOMCE camp grounds at Zaban Park. For the
more experienced campers Guilui and Tayalim provide
outdoor experiences away from camp on a short term
and long term basis.
CAMP BARNEY MED1NTZ—for boys and girls
eight years old through the teen years. Camp Barney
Medintz has served Atlanta’s Jewish community (as well
as youngsters from the entire Southeast) for the past 25
years. Camp “Barney” has earned the reputation as one
of the finest Jewish sleep-away camps in the entire
country.
BLUE JEANS WEEKEND—a weekend for 200 Jew
ish single men and women held at Camp Barney Medintz,
each year at the end of August. Although serving primar
ily Atlantans, last year participants came from 30 differ
ent states. For Jewish singles of all ages, the weekend has
become a “singles” tradition. This year’s weekend will be
held Aug. 22 thru Aug. 24; for registration information
call Patsy Goldberg, 875-7881.
FAMILY CAMP WEEKEND—held at Camp Bar
ney Medintz, Family Camp takes place over Labor Day
weekend and provides a camping experience that the
entire family can enjoy together as family units. Many
first-time family campers attend because their children
were campers at “Barney” and they want to go back to
their “summer place;” others attend because their child
ren will be campers the following year, and they see it as
an opportunity to introduce their children to camp. This
year Family Camp Weekend will be held Aug. 29 through
Sept. 1. As a camping experience, it’s great; as a family
experience it is outstanding. For information call Patsy
Goldberg, 875-7881.
SENIOR ADULT CAMP—held at Camp Barney
Medintz, Senior Adults spend a week away from home
participating in a variety of activities including arts and
crafts, nature walks, singing, dancing, discussions, fish
ing, boat rides and special evening activities. For infor
mation call Sandra Craine, 875-7881.
For all of our campers this summer, from those who
are yet to see their first campfire, to those whose crowns
are snowy but whose hearts are young, may the “light of a
thousand campfires” light up their lives and their dreams.
Please Help!

sonalities is sponsored by the After Business Hours pro
