Mayors tout Israeli security,
counsel tourist to feel safe
JERUSALEM—Thirteen inter
national mayors attending a con
ference here last week presented a
resolution to Prime Minister
Shimon Peres expressing their
appreciation of Israel's security at
a time when instability and terror
ism in the Middle East “has gripped
our cities and nations,” and encou
raging their countrymen to show
support for peace in the region by
“visiting, vacationing and travel
ling to the great democratic nation
of Israel."
Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg
and Norway spent the week in
Israel attending the seventh annual
Jerusalem Conference of Mayors
sponsored by the American Jewish
Congress, the United States Con
ference of Mayors and the Jerusa
lem Institute for Israel Studies.
Excerpts from the Mayors’
statement follow:
“We came to Israel at a time
when concern for safety and secur
ity of tourist travel has gripped our
cities and nations. After flying to
Israel, traveling its roads and
walking its streets, we are impressed
by the physical and spiritual quali
ties of Israel in general and of the
City of Jerusalem in particular.
And, beyond this, we are impressed
by Jerusalem's atmosphere of
security and friendliness.
“To all of our colleagues, friends
and fellow citizens, we can, based
on our own experience, offer our
counsel: There are many good rea
sons to travel to Israel, and con
cern for safety is not a reason to
stay away.”
Mayors from the United States,
JTS ordains its second woman
to become Conservative rabbi
NEW YORK (JT A) In a de
velopment similar to one which
enabled Amy Eilbergto be ordained
in May 1985 as the first Conserva
tive woman rabbi, another woman
was ordained in graduation exer
cises at the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America (JTS) on
May 1 1 as the second Conservative
woman rabbi.
The second woman to become a
Conservative rabbi is Nina Bierber
Feinstein of Dallas, Texas, a mem
ber of the incoming class of Sep
tember 1984.
Eilberg, of Bloomington, lnd.,
was a member of the first class of
women admitted to the JTS rab
binical school two years ago. De
pending on a variety of factors,
rabbinical training at the JTS re
quires four to six years of study.
Like Eilberg, Feinstein qualified
lor graduation and ordination
through transfer credits and cred
its earned in the JTS rabbinical
school since September 1984, ac
cording to a JTS spokesperson.
Women had been permitted to
take rabbinical school classes on
the understanding that taking such
studies would not qualify them for
rabbinical status until the first
class of 20 women candidates was
enrolled in the JTS rabbinical
school two years ago. That action
capped a bitter struggle of nearly a
decade within the Conservative
movement, led by its rabbinical
arm, the Rabbinical Assembly, to
accept women for ordination as
Conservative rabbis.
The total number of women in
JTS rabbinical school, at the close
of the 1985-86 academic year, was
30, including 11 who enrolled in
September 1985. There was one
drop-out.
Eilberg. appointed as a chaplain
at the Methodist Hospital in Indi
anapolis, continues to serve there.
