I he I uhdMtchcr Rebbc In Rabbi N iism Neve, (habad ol (icoigia The name of the Almighty that is written on the outer side of the mezuza scroll is spelled, in Hebrew, Shin-Doled- Yud. In addition to being G-d’s name, the three letters also form an acrostic, Shomer Dalsos Yisroel, “Guardian of the doors of Israel.” As Rabbi Abba declares in the Zohar: In a number of places (we see how) The Holy One, Blessed Be He, shows mercy to his children; A man builds a house, and The Holy One, Blessed Be He, says to him “Write My Name and put it on your door, and you can rest within your house, while 1 will sit outside, at your door, to guard you”...The expres sion “name” (“...write My Name...”) is a mystic synonym for spiritual light, and indicates here the all- encompassing light of mezuza which affords a general aura of protec tion for everything that belongs to the person. The Hebrew letters forming the word mezuza, when rearranged, form the words Zaz Mavess, mean ing, “Death has moved.” The mez uza tends to move and remove death, sadness, despondency and despair. The numerical equivalent (Gematria) of the Hebrew word mezuza is the same as the numeri cal value of G-d’s name AU-nai, meaning “Lord” or "Master.” Of the many different names of G-d, the connection of mezuza to the name signifying G-d's mastery indicates that the idea and obser vance of mezuza gives expression to G-d’s rule over the entire uni verse. The all-encompassing mitzva: (The observance of) one mitzva leads to yet another... I his is true of all precepts; but mezuza incor porates all other precepts and, moreover, is equal to all of them combined! Being an all-encom passing mitzva, mezuza leads to the observance of all other com mandments. Even the precept of Tefillin. to which all other mitzvot are analogous, is not said to have this unique characteristic of “including” or “incorporating" all mitzvot. During Hanuka we are told to place the Hanuka lamp on the left side of the door and the mezuza on the right side, that we should be surrounded, on the left by Torah (symbolized by the Han uka light) and on the right by mitz vot (symbolized bv the mezuzah Michelle and Yaakov Sapir of Kfar Chabad.
