He issued his appeal in an article in a recent issue of “Sh'ma” magazine, an in dependent journal of Jewish thought. Adlerstein declared that “how ever distasteful” the tone of some of Kahane’s rhetoric may be. Or thodox Jews “do find plenty of his points unarguable.” In agreement with Kahane, Adlerstein declared: “Torah law should become the law of the (Jewish) State, preserving our peoplehood by binding the Divine to all areas of human con duct, including the waging of war and limiting sexual partners to our own people." But, he added, silence about Kahane “would imply” that Or thodox Jews “lack the perspicacity to firmly reject all that Rabbi Kahane preaches that is thoroughly foreign to Torah thought.” In 1948. Alderstein noted, the Arab populace of Israel was gua ranteed rights of citizenship and due process. "Those who offered those rights did not consult God, Rabbi Kahane or Torah Law,” the educator declared. The educator said those guaran tors “were not appointed by world Jewry but they were, in the eyes of the non-Jewish world, the voice of the Jewish conscience." He added: “Can anyone glibly dismiss the Hil- Yeshiva High School of Atlanta invites you to attend its 16th Anniversary Dinner “[•■"nil Honoring Larry and Eleanor Bogart Rabbi Avrohom Weiss Spiritual Leader of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, New York Distinguished Guest Speaker Sunday, the Fifteenth of June Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Six Plaza Ballroom Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel Atlanta, Georgia S150 per couple Dietary laws observed Reception — 6:30 p.m. Dinner — 7:30 p m for more information, call Ilysc Wertheimer at 633-6908 or the Yeshiva office at 873-1492. Meir Kahane lul Hashem (desecration of the Lord’s name) that repudiating such rights would cause?’ Adlerstein said that in the debate touched off by Kahane’s proposal to deport all Arabs from Israel, “some merit” has been assumed for Kahane’s “assumption of a Hala- chic mandate to rid the Land (of Israel) of non-Jews.” It is a fact that Judaism “is not xenophobic; it extends the right of residence (in a Jewish State) to non-Jewish inhabitants who sub scribe to the fundamental princi ples of decency and humanity called the Noachide Laws." Adlerstein added: “Halachic literature abounds in affirmation of minority rights to non-idolatrous peoples in Israel.” Declaring that Kahane “is cer tainly entitled to his Halachic opinion, if he can defend it,” never theless, given the “grandstanding” Kahane practices in his politics, “there comes a point where his opinion becomes the imposition of an image of Torah Judaism upon everyone, including his dissenters.” Adlerstein asserted that “surely, Rabbi Kahane is aware that not all opinions (about Jewish religious issues) are equally weighted and the heftier questions are to be left to greater authorities.” And, Ad lerstein added, Kahane “cannot point to a single major Halachic decisor (he certainly cannot claim to be one himeself!) who supports his contentions.” In Jewish exege sis, a decisor is one qualified to hand down an opinion on an issue of Jewish Law. Adlerstein commented that ”to be charitable,” Jewish supporters of Kahane might assume that “much of what Rabbi Kahane says is meant to entice the Israeli electo rate and not for implementation. Unfortunately, the devastating effect of his rhetoric on Jews in and out of Israel is not minimized by such assumptions.” By Kahane’s practice of taking pot-shots “at the sensitivities of the entire non-Jewish world like some reckless cowboy, Jewish lives are endangered every where,” the Jewish educator de clared. The educator asserted that Kahane’s brandishing “G-d Him self’ as his “six-gun is just plain poor theology.” Adlerstein asserted that the Lord “does stand behind His people but they cannot force His hand to produce miracles, neither on the battlefield nor in the world of realpolitik.” Adlerstein declared that “it should come as no surprise that Rabbi Elazar Shach, the official mentor of both Agudah and Shas,” both Orthodox political parties in Israel, “recently instructed all Knesset members under his con trol to dissociate themselves from any and all legislation introduced by Kahane, even when they completely support the legislative intent of such bills.” Adlerstein declared that Rabbi Shach's action was taken on the premise that Kahane’s attitude of "the devil with the goyim” must be “abhorred and rejected. And not for the protection of our small interests but for the sake of G-d’s good name.
