Cantors to sing at Civic
Four world-renowned cantors
will be together on the stage of
Atlanta's Civic Center auditorium
June 17 to take part in a program
of modern and classical cantorial
music.
The 8 p.m. concert, sponsored
jointly bv Atlanta Men's ORT and
the City of Atlanta Department of
Cultural Affairs, will benefit ORTs
worldwide Scholarship Fund and
the Cantor’s Assembly Scholarship
Fund.
Performing will be cantors Ben
zion Miller, Brooklyn. N.Y., Al
berto Mizrahi. Cleveland Heights,
Ohio; and Jakov Motzen, Mont
real, Canada. In addition. Atlan
ta’s internationally renowned bari
tone Cantor Isaac Goodfriend will
be featured.
The program will include both
classic cantorial and modern music.
According to Goodfriend, “No
concert of this scope has ever been

of the growing interest in the music
of the synagogue, a large turnout is
expected.
Alter World War 11, Goodfriend
began his education at the Berlin
Conservatory of Music. In 1952 he
came to Montreal as cantor at the
Shaar Zion Congregation, and soon
won a scholarship to McGill Con
servatory of Music. He also ap
peared as soloist with the Chamber
Music Orchestra. Canadian Broad
casting Corporation, as well as in
many concerts throughout South
America and Israel.
Cantor Goodfriend came to
Atlanta after nine years at Cleve
land’s Community Temple. He is a
member of the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Council and works in
virtually every area of Atlanta’s
civic and cultural life.
Cantor Benzion Miller is cur
rently chief cantor of Congrega
tion Beth-F.l of Boro Park. He has
appeared throughout the U.S.,
Canada and Israel.
Miller has been a solo performer
since the age of five. He is a gradu
ate ol the Bobover Yeshiva in
Brooklyn, N.Y. and Bobover
Yeshiva Kedushat at Bat Yam,
Israel.
He studied with his father, Reb
Aaron Miller, and also at the
Champagne School of Music in
Montreal.
At age 18 M iller began his career
as cantor of Hillside Jewish Cen
ter, Hillside, N.J. He also served
congregations in the Bronx, Mont
real and Toronto and has several
recordings to his credit.
Cantor Yaacov Yehudah Mot
zen was born in Tel Aviv, Israel,
the son of Holocaust survivors. He
studied at Kol Torah, Be’er Yaa-
kovand Penevez Yeshivot. He also
served in the Israeli army.
At 18, Motzen began his music
and voice training and studied for
eight years with Cantor Yitzchak
Eshel.
He is known in Israel as a singer
who performed for wounded sold
iers during the Yom Kippur War.
In 1978 he arrived in Montreal,
where he is currently cantor at
Shomrim Laboker Beth Yehuda
Shaar Tefillah Synagogue. He has
performed in Australia, England
and throughout the United States.
Cantor Alberto Mizrahi is known
for superb musicianship, power
and richness of voice. The Greek-
born tenor has performed through-

He is a graduate of the Hebrew
Academy of Cleveland, the Hebrew
Theological College, Skokie, Ill.,
and the Cantor’s Institute of the
Jewish Theological Seminary, New
York.
Mizrahi qualified as a finalist in
the first Luciano Pavarotti Voice
competition in Philadelphia. A
versatile concert and operatic artist,
his credits include performances
with major symphonies and op
eratic companies. He performs in
nine languages including Hebrew.
Yiddish and Ladino. Mizrahi cur
rently serves the Park Synagogue
in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
“Never before,” says Cantor
Goodfriend, “have the cantorial
music lovers of Atlanta been able
to enjoy a concert of this scope and
quality, at the Civic Center, where
it will be open to the entire
community.”
ORT operates the world’s larg
est non-government network of
vocational, technical training facil
ities with a total enrollment of
133,000 students in 26 nations. The
Cantor’s Assembly Scholarship
Fund provides assistance to young
people who wish to study the music
of the synagogue.
