The Bar Mitzva of Michael

Michael is the son of Fran
and Bill Zuspan. He is the
grandson of Mrs. Adela Hutner
of Queens, N.Y.. and the late
Jacob Hutner; and Mrs. Wilma
Senter of Littleton. Col., and
the late Howard M. Zuspan.
Michael will share his Bar
Mitzva with Evgeny Pekar of
Moscow, U.S.S.R.
Stephen J. Labovitz has been
named chairman of the Family
Law Section of the Atlanta Bar
Association for 1986-87. He is a
partner in the law firm of Labovitz.

celebrating their 63rd wedding
anniversary with their family.

Rabbi David E. Ostrich, for
merly of Congregation B'nai Israel
of Hattiesberg, Miss., has been
named to succeed Rabbi Saul J.
Rubin of Congregation Mickve
Israel in Savannah. A native of
Crowley. La., he will assume his
new position in August.
Rabbi Ostrich, who w as ordained
by Hebrew Union College Jew ish
Institute of Religion in 1982, has
served the Hattiesburg congrega
tion since 1983 He is a graduate of
Northwestern University with
highest distinction. He held stu
dent rabbinic posts in Arkansas,
Alabama and Mississippi.
He was director of the NFTY
College and Kibbutz Program in
Israel. 1982-83. He has served as
rabbinic adviser of the Southern
Federation of Temple Youth and
as Education Director of the UAHC
Jacobs Camp.
Rabbi Ostrich and his wife are
parents of twin daughters, aged 1'/:
years.
Barbara B. Balser met with Secretary of Energy John S. Her
rington in Washington, D.C., while attending the Executive
Women’s Briefings at the United States Department of Energy .
Sponsored by Betty Heitman, co-chairman of the Republican
National Committee, the briefings are a vehicle to create avenues
of communications between business women and the policy
makers in Washington.

Jay Kaiman of Pensacola.
Fla., has been appointed field
representative for the South
east Region of United Syna-
gogue of America.
Kaiman began his involve
ment with United Synagogue in
1971. He has been active in all
levels of USY, serving as presi
dent of his local chapter and on
a regional level. He also at
tended US'! on Wheels and
Israel Pilgrimage summer pro
grams.
Atlanta playwright Barbara
Lebow was one of three recipients
ol the I 986 awards for the Mayor’s
Fellowships in the Arts. Others
who received the S5,000 award are
Ned Cart ledge, wood carver and
folk artist, and Charles Mann,
composer and musician.
Ms. Lebow’s most recent plav.
“A Shayna Maidel,” was staged at
the Academy Theatre after earning
regional and national recognition.
Her play “Little Joe Monaghan”
was included in the Burns Mantle
Plays annual for 1981-82.
Alvin L. Gray of Cleveland,
president of the American ORT
Federation, was recently elected
vice president of J WB at a biennial
convention held in Toronto.
Gray, president of the American
ORT Federation since 1983. is vice
president and administration com
mittee member of the World OR I
Union. He is vice president of the
American Jewish Congress and was
recently elected to the HI AS board
of directors. He is associate treas
urer ol the Jewish Community
Federation of Cleveland.
Gray and his wife, Anita, have
two daughters.

Gary A. Tobin, associate profes
sor of Jew ish community research
and planning at Brandeis Univer
sity, has been named director of
the university’s Maurice and
Marilyn Cohen Center for Modern
Jewish Studies.
Tobin, w ho holds a Ph. D. in city
and regional planning from the
University ol California at Berke
ley, came to Brandeis in 1984 from
W ashington University in St. Louis.
His activities include work with
national Jewish organizations and
individuals communities in social
planning.
Sonia Kuniansky and Robyn Berger display plaques they
