Dr. David Kurtzman became a
bar mitzva at B’nai Torah Congre
gation on Saturday, May 31. David,
a dentist practicing in Atlanta,
celebrated this joyous occasion
surrounded by his fiancee Robin
Loeb, family, friends, co-workers,
and the congregation.
What motivates a grown man to
study and become a bar mitzva?
David did not grow up in a home
where traditional Judaism was
observed and did not complete
Hebrew school. He was, however,
greatly influenced by his grand
father Morris, whose Judaism was
an important part of his life.
David graduated from Emory
University where he became inter
ested in learning a little more about
Judaism. He took a couple of
classes in Judaic studies and occa
sionally attended Hillel. During
his dental residency in New York
he became much more interested in
his Judaism resulting from friend
ships there with a Holocaust survi
vor and several other committed
Jews.
After moving back to Atlanta
and establishing his practice, David
felt that although he had always
been a Jew in an ethnic sense, this
could not be separated from being
a Jew in a religious sense. He began
teaching himself Hebrew and stu
died as much as he could by him
self. Then he called Rabbi Juda
Mintz at B’nai Torah, whom he
had known at Hillel during his
Emory days.
David quotes a Zen saying “When
a student is ready the teacher
appears.” Rabbi Mintz was happy
to teach David and complete a
course of study leading to a bar
mitzva.
David says for him it was a
peaceful and personally rewarding
experience. For David’s family and
friends and the entire B’nai Torah
family, it was an uplifting simeha
that made everyone proud.
