Why is it customary to sing spe
cial Sabbath songs when one is eat
ing at the Sabbath table?
These songs are usually called
"Z’miros." Generally it is consi
dered that the singing provides
enjoyment for the Sahbath meal.
Another explanation for the sing
ing is to be able to include even
those that are not well learned in
Jewish tradition. While they may
not fully understand the meaning
of the words, they still can express
the words in song. This goes hack
to the requirement that some ele
ment of culture and learning is
required to he expressed at the
table. Thus, if it is not expressed in
full meaning, it is at least expressed
in musical fashion.
Why is it customary to hold up
one's hands when making the bene
diction over the braided candle
that is used on Saturday night after
the Sabbath?
One reason given for this prac
tice is that the blessing over the
candle is a means of thanking the
Almighty for providing us with
light. Such a blessing has to include
the person’s benefit from the light.
Looking at one's fingers in the
course of the burning light amounts
to the benefit of vision.
Some commentaries claim that
when one bends his fingers, he is
observing light on the outside of
the fingers and darkness inside the
fingers. This reflects the Almighty's
creation of the world when he dis
tinguished between light and
darkness.
There are some sources who
claim that looking at one's fingers
means looking at one’s fingernails.
This is supposed to remind us that
when the first person was created,
his body was covered with finger
nail material. Because of the sin ol
Adam and Eve. fingernail material
was removed and just left on the
end of one's fingers. This is sup
posed to encourage people to regret
and atone for their sins, hoping to
regain the tissue that originally
protected their bodies in the days
of creation.

An Investment in
Peace of Mind
The selection of a final resting place is a sacred family duty that
sooner or later must be fulfilled. How much better to meet this inevit
able obligation now, w hile members of the family are together—than
postpone it until the confused, lonely hour of bereavement.
Reserv ations made before need give one a precious peace of mind
that comes from know ing that “one’s house
is in order” and that your loved ones will be A
cared for, forever, in beautiful x VI
surroundings of your own choosing.
