Jews in Sports by Haskell Cohen JTA It isn’t often that one sees former major league baseball, football or basketball players involved in some form of Jewish philanthropy and / or charity once their careers are fin ished. The most outstanding example of a former major league baseball player who has immersed himself in Jewish sports activities, particu larly in Israel, is Cy Block, who played for the Chicago Cubs base ball team in the 1940s. Block has to move over now since he is joined by a former National Football League player, Mike London of California. London, a native of Madison, Wise., who graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor of science degree, was a standout player on the roster of the football team. During the course of his college career he caught the eye of Sid Gilman of the San Diego Chargers and in 1966 became a linebacker for that NFL team. London went on to law school and is doing well as an attorney. During his spare time he has served as president of the San Diego Jew ish Community Center, as a member of the board of the Jewish Federa tion in that community, and was a member of the National Young Leadership Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal. London is also a founding member of the Friends of Wingate, school of physical education in Netanya, Israel, which turns out coaches for various sports in the secondary schools throughout the Jewish state. He has joined together with ex baseball player Block and ex-bas ketball player Leo Merson, for merly of the Long Island University Blackbirds. Together this trio is forming the guts of an organiza tion that is dedicated toward help ing the financial needs of Wingate, and, already, in their first few months of operation, have sent over $20,000 to that institution. This formidable trio is being joined by other stalwarts from the sports firmament and London has already recruited Ed Newman of the Miami Dolphins football team to join the growing entourage of former Jewish athletes who want to help out Israel in its sports pro gramming at the coaching level. Despite the fact that London is busily engaged and engrossed and turning his aims toward entering Congress he is devoting quite a bit of time to his work as chairman of the board of directors of the newly created Friends of Wingate. Right now, in addition to assum ing the chairmanship of the board of trustees for Wingate, he has announced his intention to unseat Congressman Jim Bates, who rep resents the 44th Congressional District in California. The Wingate Institution will soon be sending over an executive to work with London on the West Coast and with Block on the East Coast toward furthering the ad vance of Wingate as the dominant Physical Education School in Israel.
