Grandpar ents are Evelyn Chotiner of Delray Beach, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Spooner of Sneads, Fla. * * * Barbara Alter of Tampa, for merly of Atlanta, was the recipient of Congregation Schaarai Zedek’s President’s Cup, awarded annually to an outstanding member of the congregation. She was cited for her “untiring, relentless and beyond the call of duty" work on behalf of the Food Bank in Tampa. Mrs. Alter’s husband, Gary, is executive director of the Tampa Jewish Federation. * * * Bill and Rona Balser of Dun- woody celebrated their 25th wed ding anniversary on June 25. * * * Max Rittenbaum and Erwin Zaban have been elected to the board of directors of Shepherd Spinal Center, and S. Stephen Selig III has been named to the Center’s advisory board. Rittenbaum, chairman of the board of Clean Rite Products, is a member of the board of the Jewish Home. He is a charter member of Shepherd Spinal Center’s corpo rate development committee. A guiding force in National Ser vice Industries and its predecessor, Zep Manufacturing, Zaban serves on the boards of several companies. Selig is president of Selig Enter prises Inc., and chairman of the board of Southern Promotions Inc. Grandparents are Bess and Aaron Joss, and Lily and Issy Sher, all formerly of South Africa. Newcomers Peggy and Isaac Klug of Atlanta announce the birth of a son, Michael Phillip, on April 21. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Mendel Klug of Atlanta and the late Mrs. Lola Klug, and Mrs. Hazel Olshan of Dallas, and Dr. and Mrs. Robert Spielberger of Birmingham, Ala. Great-grandparents are Mrs. Selma Spielberger of Atlanta and the late I. W. Spielberger, and Mrs. Louise Rosenberg of Dallas. Michael was given the Hebrew name Pesach Simcha after his pat ernal great-aunt. * * * Betsey and Steven Levitas of Raleigh, N.C., announce the birth of a son, Jacob Livingston, on June 3. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mills, and Dr. and Mrs. Theo dore C. Levitas, all of Atlanta. Paternal great-grandmother is Mrs. Ida Levitas. * * * Mollie and Doug Robbins of Atlanta announce the birth of a son, Richard Benjamin, on May 16. Grandparents are Frances and Arthur Robbins of Atlanta, and Bobbie and Flash Gordon of Mem phis, Tenn. Great-grandmother is Gertie Gordon of Memphis. Richard Benjamin was named in memory of his paternal great grandfather, Benjamin Stein. * * * Lynn and D.J. Pascale of Atlanta announce the birth of a daughter, Renee Paula, on May 29. Grandparents are Renee and Raymond Arogeti of Atlanta. Great-grandparents are Regina Arogeti and Rachel and Isaac Franco, all of Atlanta. Ruth Gurwitch, Atlanta native and graduate of the Hebrew Academy recenly graduated 15th in her class from Bolton High School in Alexandria, La. Ruth, 17, received the American Newspaper Publishers Associa tion’s Scholastic Journalist Award presented by the Alex andria Daily Town Talk as the most valuable staffer on the Bolton High School newspaper, the “Cumtux.” Ruth served the paper as editor for 1985-86 and reporter in 1984-85. Ruth was also a member of the National Honor Society, Quill and Scroll yearbook staff, and a two year contributor to the school literary magazine, “Ecrivez.” She participated in the Louisiana high school liter ary rally in her junior year in journalism and as a senior in English and Spanish. In her senior year, Ruth let tered in swimming as a member of the Bolton High School swim team, winners of the district swimming championships. Ruth was a member of stu dent council and served the Alexandria Temple Youth Group as treasurer. Ruth is the daughter of Janet and Bert Gurwitch. She is the granddaughter of Evelyn Schwab of Birmingham, Ala. and the late Martin Schwab and the late Bernyce and Joe Gurwitch of Mobile, Ala. Now living with her parents in Omaha, Neb., she plans to enter the University of Missouri at Columbia in the fall to study journalism. Natalie B. Wilensky, daughter of Larry and Sheila Wilensky of Atlanta, graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College. She is a 1982 graduate of the Westminster Schools. At Dartmouth, she was a government major. She served as Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority’s representative to the Interfrater nity Council and as the Interfra ternity Council’s chief of social programming. She was a member of the Student Assembly. She received academic citations for outstanding work in computer science and English courses. She participated in the college’s For eign Study Program in Toulouse, France. The Bar Mitzva of Derek Morgan Green of Atlanta will take place at 9:30 a.m. Satur day, July 12, at Congregation Beth Shalom. A congregational kiddush and luncheon will follow. Derek is the son of Ellabeth and Robert Green. Grandpar ents are Ruth Green of Long Beach, Calif., Sam Green of Apollo Beach, Fla., Goldie Thomas of Metter, Ga., and the late Morgan C. Thomas. Eli Steinbuch, president of Zim- American Israeli Shipping Co. Inc. (ZA1SCO), the merchant marine fleet of the State of Israel, was recently honored with a special award by the International Trade and Transportation Division of the United Jewish Appeal-Federa tion. Steinbuch was honored for out standing humanitarian contribu tions to Jews and non-Jews in the United States, in Israel, and around the world. The award was pre sented at the division’s annual award dinner in New York City. The Bar Mitzva of Roger Marc Levine of Atlanta will take place at 8:30 a.m. Satur day, July 12, at Shearith Israel Synagogue. A congregational kiddush will follow. Roger is the son of April Levine and Jeff Levine. Grand parents are Judge and Mrs. A.D. Levy of New York City. Actor Jack Lemmon hasbeen named honorary president of the world’s first International Peace Park. The Jewish National Fund of Greater New York is sponsoring the project. The park will be situated in the Israel-Egypt border area of Ezuz and will commemorate the Camp David Accord. The nations of the world are being invited to send flora and fauna to “The Garden of the Nations,” one of the major sec tions of the park to be “greened” out of the Negev desert.
