El Al security guard averts
tragedy at Madrid airport
TEL AVIV (JTA)—An alert El
Al security guard saved many lives
and averted tragedy when a bomb
exploded at the El Al counter at
Barajas International Airport in
Madrid June 26, according to an
Israel Radio report.
The report said the guard, who
was slightly wounded, was examin
ing a handbag carried by the last
passenger in line waiting to board
an El Al flight to Tel Aviv. He
noticed smoke coming from the
case and grabbed a fire extinguisher.
He shouted to people nearby to
handbag blew up. according to the
Israel Radio version of the incident.
A Spanish security agent was
among the eight people injured.
The injuries were caused by the col
lapse of the ceiling, Israel Radio
said.
The bomb, apparently detonated
by remote control, exploded less
than an hour after Israel s first
ambassador to Spain, Shmuel Ha-
dass, landed at the airport on an El
Al flight.
According to police, it detonated
at 3:30 p.m. local time inside a
veyor belt. The check-in counter
burst into flames as people fled in
panic, eye witnesses said.
Police believe one of the injured
might be a terrorist. They are hold
ing a suspect who was caught try
ing to leave the air terminal after
the blast.
Israel and Spain established dip
lomatic relations last Jan. 17. Since
then, the Spanish authorities have
stepped up security precautions at
the airport and near Israeli and
Jewish institutions.

Klinghoffer attorneys say PLO
should pay damages for murder
by Edwin Eytan
GENOA (JTA) —Attorneys for
the Klinghoffer family, and for the
owners of the cruise ship Achille
Lauro, demanded in criminal court
here Tuesday that the Palestine
Liberation Organization be made
to pay damages for the hijacking of
the vessel last October and the
murder of 69-year-old l.eon Kling
hoffer “because he was Jewish.”
Oreste Terracini, representing
Klinghoffer’s youngest daughter,
addressed the court which is trying
15 persons accused of the hijack
and murder, 10 of whom are still at
large. Fourteen of the defendants
are Arabs and one is Greek. “The
man who shot Klinghoffer in his
wheelchair was heartless but those
who armed his hand were just as

merciless,” Terracini declared, re
ferring to the PL.O.
He dismissed the defendants'
claim that they were soldiers fight
ing for the liberation of Palestine.
“No cause can justify such actions.
Klinghoffer was killed because he
was Jewish. It he had not been Jew
ish, some other passenger would
have been murdered.” Terracini
said. He added, “For some people
the victim, Leon Klinghoffer, was
an enemy but for many others he is
a symbol of courage and sacrifice.”
Lawyers representing civil plain
tiffs supported Terracini’s demand
that the PLO be held financially
responsible. The actual damages
will be fixed later by a civil court.
The findings by the criminial court
however will affect the assessment.
Edoardo Ascari, an attorney for
the Lauro Line of Genoa which
owns Achille Lauro, insisted that
the PLO is responsible although
the accused hijackers were identi
fied as members of the Palestine
Liberation Front, a splinter group.
Ascari rejected their claim that
they are “friends of Italy." He
recalled last year’s terrorist attack
at the Rome airport and the fact
that the PLO provided arms and
explosives to the Red Brigade.
“What kind of friends are these?”
Ascari asked.
