With either photographs, movies or videos—or a combina tion of the above—the important occasion will be preserved to enjoy over and over again. Whatever the choice might be. it's necessary to reserve the photo grapher or film-maker as soon as the date of the bar bat mitzva is set. It's best to go with the services of a professional, since a talented friend or relative may be under too much pressure to get good shots to enjoy the festivities. Friends or family, however, can add to the memories with candid snapshots. A few weeks before the event, parents will need to discuss several things with the photographer or video film expert. These include the tables which need to be photo graphed. the important friends or family members to photograph, special or specific shots, and re quests from guests for photos. In addition, details such as the pho tographer’s time of arrival, whether he or she should eat or drink, and the wearing of a yarmulke. The professionals should also be in formed if an amateur will also be shooting. If you desire a photograph to run with the bar/bat mitzva an nouncement in The Southern l S - raelite, be sure to have it arrive at the newspaper about three weeks before the event. Eat, drink and be merry In addition to the traditional kiddush after the ceremony, it has become a custom in this country to plan a party or reception to cele brate a child's bar bat mitzva. This can range from a small party at home tor close tamily and friends to an elaborately catered affair at the synagogue or a hotel. As soon as the bar bat mitzva date is set is the best time to begin the informa tion-gathering for the selection of a caterer. W here some synagogues or tem ples might require that their own statf prepare and sene any food to be eaten in the building, others can recommend outside catering and w ill furnish the names of past cus tomers so that first-hand informa tion is available. A recommenda tion from someone w ho has recently used the caterer is always advisa ble. but a sneak peek into the kit chen of a party being prepared by the caterer can give an indication of the efficiency and professional ism of the staff. When comparing caterers, be advised that it's wrong to assume that anything is included in the price unless it is asked for specifi cally. Gratuities for the help should be included in the estimate and final bill as well as the base price per person, extra set-up and bar charges, number of courses, linen charge and chair rental. Also be aware that kosher meals generally run higher than non-kosher meals. Be sure to know in advance whether the head caterer or an assistant will be in charge of the arrangements. Always request a written estimate and references. When a decision has been made, request a firm contract that spells out all the extras.
