Everyone on this crowded El A1 747 is cheering. Even though I’ve been to Israel many times, the goose bumps came back along with the lump in my throat. Fighting for my luggage and going through security made me feel like everything was the same, that nothing had changed. When I checked into the Jerusa lem Hilton, I could easily see a big difference. The staff was friendly as usual, but more than one person said, “Welcome to Israel. It’s nice to see an American.” Sure enough, looking around the lobby and the dental meeting downstairs, there were very few Americans. As the week progressed, the lack of tour buses and big crowds at the popu lar tourists spots was almost frightening. We have all heard that tourism was down in Israel, but seeing the Kotcl without one per son visiting or praying really hit home. It’s almost as if terrorism is succeeding—cutting into Israel’s welfare and tourism—where the military threats and fighting could not succeed. When 1 made plans with Yechi Sarig to visit Yehud, he couldn’t wait to show me the many changes since my last visit. The one thing he was most excited about was being able to show me the “Miracle of the Pool.” We arrived at the Yehud Com munity Center and went straight back to see the pool. It was really a beautiful sight. There were two swimming classes being taught, and you could tell the children were anxious to get into the water. This was the second day of operation of this new pool, and there were many people just coming to visit—to see how beautiful it really was. After a short while, I learned that having this swimming pool was a miracle for everyone in Yehud. Mayor Mordechai Linik joined Yechi and me and walked all around the grounds. The mayor showed me where they have filled in a por tion of a large crater to make a terrace around the pool. He is very proud of this finishing touch — which will allow people to play and relax around the pool. In fact, he refers to this job as the Mount Sinai of Yehud. With the completion of the pool, they have finally reached the top. He hopes someday to fill in a little more of this crater and build a road from the gym to the pool — another dream, another miracle. We all knew Mayor Linik before when he was vice mayor. Ever yone in Yehud calls him a dream er, but they know he makes the dreams come true. He is very proud of Yehud’s growth and accomp lishments, and he was very active in Yehud’s Project Renewal pro grams. He makes sure that all vis itors to Yehud learn of Atlanta, Ga. We drove over to the gym and met Laura Kindler who is our representative to Yehud. She is also very proud of the many accom plishments Yehud has made and she wants more people from Atlanta to come to see our sister city. She told me many times how much Yehud appreciates our financial support; how they want us to come and see the fruits of our joint efforts. Yechi.
