"Birmingham’s Rabbi, Morris Newfield and Alabama, 1895-1940” is written by historian Mark Cowett. Dr. Leon J. Weinberger, a Uni versity of Alabama research pro lessor, is general editor of the series. I he book is a biography of Rabbi Morris Newfield, spiritual leader of I emple Emanuel in Birmingham trom (895 to 1940 and an influen tial clergyman in Alabama. Morris Newfield is seen as a rabbi who struggles to help Jews preserve their religious identity in a sometimes hostile environment. He emerges not only as a leader of lews but as one who inspires con- tidence among Jews and Christians during stressful times. As l read about the terrorists and the questions of safety around the world I can recall a trip to Italy and the threat of the Red Brigade and the bombings which took place a block away which was real and frightening. Yet, in Israel there was a feeling of complete safety and at no time were there thoughts of any threat. I was secure and felt pro tected by this most cautious of nations from the moment I entered the El Al facilities at the New York airport until we returned to the United States. During free time many visited the sea, Tel Aviv, bathed in the Mediterranean, visited museums, spent an evening in Jaffa and then upon completion of the tour of duty, which was celebrated with a farewell party, some friends gath ered and rented a car and traveled the length of Israel. But that is another story for we had adven tures that were most exciting and included a visit to the Technion Institute in Haifa for a private tour; a visit to the Negev and a kibbutz, on to Jerusalem for Inde pendence Day celebrations where night became day as the streets were lit up and the singing and dancing lasted on into the early morning hours. All this could well take its toll on the mere traveler but not so for this Volunteer for Israel. As a new resi dent of Atlanta (10 months) fortu nate enough to experience the Southern Jewish hospitality and make new friends, much the same as in Israel, I look forward to returning to Israel with a contingent of Volunteers from this great city.
