The 48-foot-long, 14-ton Kyrenia II, an open-decked wooden vessel, was loaded on board the 760-foot-long, 35,000-ton Zim New York in Piraeus and was unloaded in Port Elizabeth, N.J. The Kyre nia II was the smallest ship to par ticipate in Operation Sail, and the only ship without an engine on board. The Kyrenia II is an exact copy of a Greek trading ship which was wrecked off the island of Cyprus around 300 B.C.E. The original vessel was excavated in the 1960s by an international diving team led by Michael Katzev, a U.S. under water archaeologist. The recon structed ship is displayed in Kyre nia Castle in northern Cyprus, com plete with its cargo of 400 am phorae, clay jars which held wine. A Greek shipyard built the Kyrenia II in 10 months, using ancient ship construction techniques. Zim provides regularly scheduled cargo services between North A- merica and the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Far East. Zim op erates over 70 vessels calling at more than 250 ports worldwide.
