The Bar Mitzva of Jared
Michael Blum of Atlanta will
take place at 10 a.m. Saturday,
Aug. 16, at Temple Emanu-El.
A congregational kiddush will
follow.
Jared is the son of Caryn and
Stephen Blum. He is the grand
son of the late Sylvia and Harry
Blum of Atlanta, and Anna
Gewirtz of Miami and the late
Joseph Gewirtz.
Jared will share his Bar Mitzva
with Igor Alterman of the
U.S.S.R.
Ivan Holtz recently received his
bachelor of business administra
tion degree from Emory Univer
sity. He graduated at the top his
class in the business school.
In addition, Holtz was inducted
into the Beta Gamma Sigma, a
national academic honorary society,
and Alpha Nu Alpha, a national
marketing honorary.
He was recognized by faculty
and peers of the business school as
its outstanding marketing student,
and at a reception, was honored by
the Georgia Chapter of the Ameri
can Marketing Association as
Emory’s outstanding marketing
graduate.
Holtz is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Neil Holtz of S. Orange, N.J., and
the grandson of Mrs. Lou Kalin of
Dublin, Ga.

Donna Singer Green, a native of
Chicago and a resident of La Jolla,
Calif., was elected national presi
dent of the National Ladies Auxil
iary, Jewish War Veterans of the
USA Inc. during the recent 59th
annual national convention.

The Bat Mitzva of Sara Joy
Burrows of Atlanta, formerly
of Montreal, Canada, will take
place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday,
Aug. 16, at Congregation B’nai
Torah. A congregational kid
dush will follow.
Sara is the daughter of Helen
and Michael Burrows. She is
the granddaughter of Cantor
and Mrs. Solomon Gisser and
Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Burrows,
all of Montreal.
Former U.S. Rep. Elliott Levi-
tas has been named to the board of
directors of the Chatham House
Foundation Inc. in Washington,
D.C. The foundation was estab
lished to increase American partic
ipation in and the support for the
Royal Instititute of International
Affairs at Chatham House in
London.
Levitas is a partner in the
Atlanta law' firm of Kilpatrick and
Cody. While in Congress, he served
as a United States delegate to the
North Atlantic Assembly—the par
liamentary arm of NATO, was vice
chairman of the economics com
mittee and was a member of the
military committee. In addition,
Levitas has served as a member of
the Interparliamentary Union, a
worldwide group of parliamentar
ians, and was a founding member
of the advisory board of the Inter
national Parliamentary Group for
Human Rights.
Reva Ezell of Atlanta, radio
manager of WABE-FM 90. was
recently selected by the Corpora
tion for Public Broadcasting(CPB)
to serve on the review panel for
Community Service Grants (con
gressional^ appropriated funds)
for the fiscal year 1988.
A charter member of Temple
Sinai, she and her husband Hank
have two children.

The American Jewish Joint Dis
tribution Committee has elected
New York attorney Herbert M.
Singer as chairman of its board of
directors.
The position of board chairman
became vacant as a result of the
resignation of Henry J aub due to
his election as president ol the Uni
ted Israel Appeal. The board elected
Taub an honorary president of
JDC.
Singer, an active member of the
J DC board for 20 years, has served
as vice chairman and co-treasurer.
He was instrumental in the foun
dation of the JDC/Brookdale In
stitute of Gerontology and Adult
Human Development in Jerusalem.

Judith S. Siegel was recently
elected executive director of the
National Ladies Auxiliary of the
Jewish War Veterans. As executive
director, she will supervise the pub
lication of JWVA’s Quarterly Bul
letin, handle public relations, and
coordinate and attend national ex
ecutive committee meetings and
national conventions. She will also
be liaison to related national organ
izations. Ms. Siegel has been direc
tor of special events for the Wash
ington Opera, John F. Kennedy
Center for the past three years.
A resident of Gaithersburg, Md.,
' she is a native of Richmond, Va.

William Silver of Atlanta will
take place at 8:45 a.m. Satur
day, Aug. 16, at Ahavath Achim
Synagogue. A congregational
kiddush will follow.
Darren is the son of Carla
and Arthur Silver. Grandpar
ents are Mr. and Mrs. Norman
Weitz, Mrs. Esther Silver, all of
the Atlanta, and the late Dr.
Louis Silver.

Philip E. Newman published an
article on “Nearsightedness-
Bringing Treatment into Focus” in
the June/July 1986 issue of Geor
gia Journal.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y..
Newman trained at the Medical
College of Virginia, University of
California in San Francisco and
Emory University before entering
private practice two years ago. He
is a specialist in corneal and kera-
torefractive surgery with Hagler.
Jarrett, North, Pollard, Harbin and
Devine.
As an Eagle Scout project, Jason Daniel LeRoy of Marietta
designed the new sign for Congregation Etz Chaim. Jason built a
scale model of the sign, obtained building permits, and oversaw the
construction and landscaping of the sign.
The new sign is to be dedicated in memory of the parents of Dr.
and Mrs. Noel Holtz, the sign's benefactors, on the evening of Sept.
6.
Jason will complete his submission of the paperwork for his
project and go before the Eagle Board of Review. A member of
Troop 795 in Cobb County, he is the son of Etz Chaim members,
Ronald and Diane LeRoy.
Dr. Morris A. Kipper, interna
tional director of the Alexander
Muss High School m Israel, recently
accepted the Shazar Prize on behalf
of the 5,000 alumni, students and
faculty members of the program.
The prize is awarded biannually to
the outstanding education program
that demonstrates excellence in
international innovative education.

American Lung Association (ALA) of Georgia’s highest honors.
Professional of the Year," at the association’s recent annual meet
ing in Savannah. 1 he award is presented annually in recognition of
outstanding medical professional service or research related to the
objectives of the Lung Association.
Recognized for his efforts in organizing Camp Breathe Easy, an
ALA of Atlanta summer camp for asthmatic children, Dr. Tinkel-
man has served on the ALA of Georgia's board of directors and as
president of the ALA of Atlanta. He also helped develop the ALA
of Georgia s I- amily Asthma Program to help families learn daily
coping strategies for children who have asthmas.
Dr. Tinkelman is a pediatric allergist in practice with the
Atlanta Allergy Clinic, P.A.
