George Birnbaum, president; Rebecca Hoelting, vice president; Avis Gris, treasurer; Joseph Shaw, secretary, all want to get the mes sage across that Yeshiva is ready to have a place of its own. “And with that, 1 think you will see even more school spirit,” said Birnbaum. who, along with the vast majority of students, feels the time has come for Atlanta’s only Jewish high school to have its own building. The high school is cur rently located along a corridor of the Atlanta Jewish Community Center on Peachtree Street. The school received “exemplary Tisha B’Av Quiz Box by Rabbi Samuel J. Fox Why is the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Av considered to be a holiday according to Jewish tradition? A number of reasons are of fered for making this day a minor holiday. The Talmud (Baba Bathra) offers several reasons. One is that it was on this date that Jews of the various tribes were finally allowed to intermarry w'ith Jews of other tribes. A second reason is that on this day, the tribe of Benjamin whose citizens were not allowed to marry people of other tribes were finally allowed to marry people of other tribes. A third reason offered by the Talmud is that it was on this day that the Jews who were traveling in the wilderness ended the curse which ordained that those who had sinned would have to die before they reached the promised land. A fourth reason is that this was the day when the King Hosea finally allowed the Jews to have access to Jerusalem. A fifth reason is that this was the day when the Romans finally al lowed the people they killed at Betar to be buried. A sixth reason is that this was the day on the Hebrew calendar when the woodcutting operation which was necessary to provide wood burning at the altar in the temple came to an end for the year. It is also stated that this was the day when the famous Rabbi Simon ben Gamliel escaped from the for tress of Betar and thus had saved his life. Some offer a practical basis for this festival, claiming that the fast day of the Ninth of Av which had been observed and ended five days before this date was to be followed shortly by this 15th day of Av to indicate that there is an end to the suffering of the Jewish people and that tragedies would be followed by good events. The rabbis even state that this minor holiday is one ol two holi days which were the happiest on fire Jewish calenthtrtTaHnmF Bn bn Bathra 121a). status” from the U.S. Department of Education last year, and was reaccredited by the Southern Asso ciation of Colleges and Schools (SACS) this year. That accredita tion will be lost if Yeshiva does not find a new school building quickly. What school spirit will be this year and finding a new building were major concerns of Birnbaum and fellow members of the Student Council during a discussion that took place within the crowded con fines of Rabbi Herbert Cohen’s office. For the past 10 years, Cohen has been dean of a school that has grown in terms of quality Judaic and secular programs now offered and faculty presently there. “Although we are grateful for the Atlanta Jewish Community Center for letting us use their build ing, Yeshiva High School has grown to where we need more room,” said Shaw. During the past school year, Yeshiva’s lunchroom w as converted into the Holocaust Museum, the game room into an art gallery. The library’s size prohibits the school from buying any new books. Hoelting believes problems like these would not occur “if we had our own building,” and a new school building would, “help in crease enrollment.” A new build ing, according to Rabbi Cohen, would help Yeshiva increase its present enrollment from 83 to 150 within a few years. In 1976, 36 Yeshiva High School students re located from a building on LaVista Road to the AJCC. “Whatever we do or wherever we go next, it is important for Atlanta’s Jewish community to realize this is not a school that trains rabbis,” said Birnbaum. “Students who attend Yeshiva High School of Atlanta come from var ious religious backgrounds. We are not here to become rabbis or cantors. “We are here to become knowl edgeable about our faith, to streng then our Jew ish identity and obser vance, and to receive the best edu cation possible. A new building would help strengthen our image and identity.” Do You Have Children That Attend Private or Parochial Schools And Wear School Uniforms or Are Going to Prep School?
