Since its formation by Dot Cohen, the group has met monthly, providing keynote speakers. They have been entertained by opera singer Janice Meyerson, a J.C. Penney artist affiliate, who per formed at Emory University the same week. She not only was enter taining, but informative as she ex plained the meaning of her selec tions and related them to our Jewish heritage. Dr. Herbert Karp discussed the many factors that should be consid ered between doctor and patient when acquiring medical care. Ques tions asked after the presentation provided participants with infor mation that could be helpful to them in future situations. On a lighter note, Rose Klotz delighted the group with a book review on Eric Segal’s “The Class." David Meltz presented legal in formation that created a series of stimulating questions and answers. The men and women in attendance were well informed in this area and contributed to an enlightening afternoon. During Hanuka, the Epstein School provided a light program with dancing and singing. Many of the audience recognized grandchil dren on stage. The exchange of giv ing between the young and “young at heart” was a thrilling experience for all. When Betty Goodfriend, wife of the cantor of Ahavath Achim Syn agogue, related her experiences of “Life in the Shtetl,” all left that day ori an emotional “high” from a mixture of laughter and tears. A closeness and togetherness of regu lar participants had indeed been achieved. When Rabbi Harry Epstein spoke to an overflow crowd of 75 on “Howto Enjoy Their Senior Years,” he received much applause and vows to follow his profound advice. Exercising the mind and helping others were excellent words of ad vice for all in attendance. One of the programs was a mus ical presentation by Cantor Isaac Goodfriend. By the end of the selection of Yiddish songs, all who knew the words were singing along. The closing program for the year was so informative and entertain ing that many of the “regulars" were asking for more after an hour-and-a-half of exciting, thought-provoking discussion. The experiences related among the 40 participants, and the discussion, stimulated by the dynamic person ality of Zeke Segal, former CBS bureau chief and journalist-in-resi- dence, Brenau College, left ev eryone eager to begin the next ser ies of programs in September. Everyone is welcome to attend Ahava meetings. Many participate in other senior adult activities in the community but manage to fit this into' their busy schedules. Committees have been formed to “involve” those who wish to be more active. Friendships have been made by those who recently moved to Atlanta and needed a small “niche” to feel a part of. Through an intergenerational program initiated at the Epstein School, some volunteers tutor chil dren in English and Hebrew stu dies. Others fill the role of foster grandparents, providing positive relationships with older persons. The programs are preceded by a kosher luncheon at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue for a minimal fee. Free transportation is provided for those who call the synagogue office at 355-5222 and request it. Anyone who would like to par ticipate and/or assist with this program, call Jennie Moret, 252- 3313, Dot Cohen, 233-8776, or the synagogue, 355-5222.
