Test-firing of missile successful
TEL AVIV (J TA)—Israel’s newest weapon, a ship-borne mis
sile called Barak (Lightning) has been successfully test-fired, Israel
Radio reported Wednesday. The radar-directed short-range mis
sile is designed for fast attack naval craft. A land-borne version
known as Adams (Air Defense Advanced Mobile System) can be
fired from moving vehicles against attacking aircraft.
Both were developed and produced by Rafael, the state-owned
weapons development authority, jointly with Israel Aircraft Indus
tries, for defense against small boats, shore targets, low-flying
aircraft and helicopters.
PLO grows in West Germany
BONN (JTA)—Hundreds of members of the Palestine Libera
tion Organization and other Palestine groups linked to terrorist
activities are among the refugees who have come to West Berlin in
the past few months, according to Interior Ministry officials and
police officers here.
The sources, who spoke privately, said that West Germany can
do nothing to stop the influx of members of the extremist organiza
tions among refugees who ask for political asylum in this country.
One long-term effect of the latest development, an official
predicted, would be the enlargement of a constituency of Arabs
who are loyal to the PLO and who will possibly participate in its
political and other activities.
Israel’s navy to be upgraded?
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The navy, the smallest and probably least
publicized branch of the Israel Defense Force, is due for major
expansion and greater attention if Commander Rear Admiral
■ Avraham Ben-Shushan’s plans are implemented.
They call for the construction of four more Saar Class missile
boats and three new submarines at a cost of about $1 billion.
Ben-Shushan expressed grave concern over the growing naval
strength of enemy Arab states and the increased frequency and
sophistication of terrorist attempts attacking Israel by sea.
Refugees wage war on drugs
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Shuafat refugee camp north of
Jerusalem is the scene of a determined war against drug traffickers
being waged by camp residents and their local religious leaders.
The police say Shuafat is a major drug center which attracts Israeli
as well as Arab dealers.
About 150 youths staged an anti-drug demonstration after
prayer services at the camp mosque July 23. It degenerated into a
riot in which 10 people were injured including a 10-year-old boy,
two women and an Israeli taxi driver. Police, border police and
army units surrounded the camp but did not intervene.
Grenade injures 13 in Jericho
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Thirteen Israelis from a settlement in
northern Israel on a day sightseeing visit to Jericho were injured
July 24 when a grenade was tossed at them as they were passing
through the West Bank town.
Three persons were reported in serious condition while three
others were reported to have sustained moderate wounds. Seven
others were slightly hurt from the grenade. George Habash’s ter
rorist organization, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Pales
tine, claimed responsiblity for the attack.
Greek leader’s wife to visit Israel
ATHENS(JTA)—Margarita Papandreou, wife of Greek Prime
Minister Andreas Papandreou. has accepted an invitation to visit
Israel extended by Knesset member Shulamit Aloni, who visited
Greece last week.
She said she would go to Israel late this year or early in 1987 in
her capacity as president of a women’s organization affiliated with
her husband’s Socialist Party.
Court upholds pardon by Herzog
WASHINGTON (Polakoff)—Israeli President Chaim Her
zog’s pardon to the head of the country’s secret service, Avraham
Shalom, was upheld Wednesday by the Supreme Court in Jerusa
lem. Shalom had allegedly ordered the killing of two captured
Palestinian hijackers of a bus in which an Israeli female soldier was
killed.
The court, consisting of three judges, also rejected the appeal
for a commission of inquiry about the alleged cover-up of the
killing of the two Arab prisoners by Israeli soldiers.

Fulton Dems put out LaRouchite alert
resolution, we refused to qualify
them despite their threats to sue
and other wild statements. They
were unsuccessful in trying to get
the U.S. District Judge Orinda
Evans to compel us to let them
qualify for Executive Committee
posts and to compel us to reopen
the qualification process.
We are pleased that the State
Democratic Party has also taken
action to bar them from office in
the State Democratic Executive
Committee.
Interestingly, “paid honchos”
(Andrew) Rotstein and (Gerald)
Belsky live at the same apartment
address; they both work for the
Caucus Distributors Inc. which dis
tributes the LaRouche “Executive
Intelligence Review.” The same
office is the headquarters for the
Caucus Distributors Inc. and the
National Democratic Policy Com
mittee (LaRouche political arm).
It is under these set ups that they
spew their hate and zany charges.
The Fulton County Democratic
Committee in keeping with its an
nounced intention to put the spot

ters, in its recent newsletter urged

Why Waldheim?
Editor:
I read with interest the article on
the front page of The Southern
Isralite (Aug. 1) regarding the
Vienna visit of Rabbi Weiss and
Sister Thering.
I have just returned from Vienna
where I attended Saturday morn
ing services at the famous old Sei-
tenstettengasse synagogue and
talked to a great number of Jews
and non-Jews.
The reason Waldheim was elected
president of Austria was, in my
opinion, that 54 percent of the
voters perceived him to be the bet
ter qualified candidate. His service

LaRouche candidates, saying:
“Do not vote for:

“John Perry Chaney-4th Con
gressional District Candidate
“Andrew Rotstein-5th Congres

“If you vote in the Democratic
primary on Aug. 12, vote for any
candidate of your choice for any
office. However, do not vote for
any of the LaRouchites. Vote for
any candidate you want but NOT
for any LaRouchites—they are not
true Democrats. Do not vote for
these hate-mongers and spreaders
of lies and bigotry.”
We are convinced your columns,
and our efforts to put the spotlight
on these “loony” LaRouchites will
make sure that we can defeat and
eliminate these hatemongers and
bigots.
Joseph Jacobs
Fulton County Democratic
Party Chairman
in the German army, etc., probably
had little effect on the vote. Do not
forget that his opponent, Steyrer,
also served in the Wehrmacht. An
other factor probably was that
throughout Europe the political
trend is toward the right and
Waldheim’s party is right of center
whereas Steyrer’s party is left of
center.
No doubt there is anti-Semitism
in Austria, as there is in the United
States. However in my numerous
trips to all parts of Austria during
the past 30 years I have never
encountered any anti-Semitism.

1 have read with much interest
your well-written columns in which
you alerted your readers to the
dangers of the LaRouchies as exem
plified by their wild statements,
and their insidious infiltration into
the Demorcratic Party in Illinois.
Putting the spotlight on their local
candidates, in my humble judg
ment, may alert Atlanta and Geor
gia voters not to make the same
mistake which the voters made in
Illinois.
1 am pleased that the Fulton
County Democratic Executive
Committee helped put the spotlight
on these LaRouchites when they
tried to run candidates for the
Atlanta City Council and the At
lanta Board of Education not too
long ago. As a result, they got an
infinitesimal vote and every one of
their candidates was defeated.
Since then the Fulton County
Democratic Executive Committee
investigated the antics and doings
of these kooks, and passed a resolu
tion which excludes them from
qualifying and holding office as
members of the Fulton County
Democratic Executive Committee.
When qualification time arrived,
two of their paid organizers, to
gether with two elderly black
women whom they had apparently
persuaded to seek to qualify, sought
to qualify and run for a member of
the executive board of the Party.

on MCI long lines
Editor:
If you subscribe to MCI long
lines, please note they now extend
overseas to almost every country in
the Middle East except Israel.
When 1 called to find out if lines
to Israel were being planned, 1 was
told they were not and other long
lines services could reach Israel.
I told the young lady to drop my
arrangement with MCI and I’d
pick up a company that is directly
connected.
Were you aware of this MCI
“arrangement?’
