1 Chaim
People doing unto others
The Broders: Dedicated to volunteer work.
by Robyn Freedman Spizman
An original. One of a kind. Iron
ically. this is how Herbert and Syl
via Broder’s custom tailoring busi
ness “Herbert’s Originals” got its
name. It’s no coincidence that this
is also how 1 would describe the
since-retired husband and wife
team.
While they dedicate their time to
volunteer work, both Herbert and
Sylvia* share their love for each
other, combining efforts while
helping others. L’Chaim is proud
to share the Broders’ story, for they
represent the kind of caring that
exemplifies what this column stands
for.
Herbert and Sylvia’s volunteer
work began in spare moments they
had while running their store. Re
tired since 1981, they are delighted
to have the time to pursue their
volunteerism. Herbert proudly
claims, “When 1 first got started 1
was a B’nai B’rith woman.” That’s
because Herbert began singing at
the Jewish Home as part of the
shows that B’nai B’rith women put
on in the early ’70s. Since then and
regularly for the past five years,
every Thursday Herbert and Syl
via continue to entertain residents
at the Home. Herbert sings and
Sylvia dances with the residents. I
was fortunate enough to witness
one of their sessions. The piano
player tapped out the song “When
You're Smiling, The Whole World
Smiles With You.” As Herbert
sang, there was a look in his eyes
that was full of hope and love. Syl
via, swaying to the music, was
beaming as she held one woman’s
hands who hummed along with the
melody. Another woman shuffled
her feet as she clapped her hands.
No resident went untouched or
unnoticed by this musical duo.
While gazing upon the energy, love
and beauty that the Broders brought
during those moments, my eyes
filled with tears. 1 was extremely
touched by the amount of affection
that Herbert and Sylvia were giv
ing and how appreciated they were.
Herbert explained that he came
by his singing and tailoring natu
rally. His great-grandfather was
the chief rabbi in a small town in
Russia and one grandfather was a
rabbi and the other was a shamas.
His father sang and Herbert also
followed in his footsteps as he was
a third-generation tailor. In fact,
while living in New York prior to
moving to Atlanta in 1968, Her
bert and his teenage son sang to
gether in the Hebrew Choir which
was a commercial choir that tra
veled across the country.
One additional ingredient that
contributes to this month’s featured
couple is the love they project as a
team. When 1 asked some of the
things they share in common, they
answered in unison, “Everything.”
Herbert smiled as he told me the
classic story of a husband and wife
who were very poor and wanted to
get each other a gift. The wife’s
only possession was her beautiful
long hair and the husband’s was his
gold pocket watch. The wife sold
her hair to buy a chain for his
watch and the husband sold his
watch to buy a comb for her hair.
“So you see,” Herbert commented,
“this is like Sylvia and me...she
looks out for me and I look out for
her.”
In addition to their singing.
Herbert also counsels patients who
have had heart attacks. Herbert,
who has had two, said, “This was a
very difficult time; however, Sylvia
suffered more than 1 did.” Herbert
belongs to the AJCC and exercises
three times a week at the Cardiac
Rehabilitation Class.
1 asked them how they met and
you would have thought it was yes
terday as they told me the details of
their meeting. New York was the
setting and two of their mutual
friends were dating. They all went
over to listen to some records. The
song that played (to be exact) was
“Was He Attractive?” Obviously
he was and so was she—it was love
at first sight. In fact, the Broders
celebrate two anniversaries. March
3, 1941, when they met, and July 3.
when they married 43 years ago.
That’s over 80 anniversaries and
they seem to cherish each one.
Now this just isn’t your every
day singing volunteer worker and
