Weinberger said through a De fense Department spokesman, Larry Icenogle, that the Pentagon is studying various alternatives to reduce production expenses and expects Israel to “review the matter with us.’’ Icenogle indicated the possibility of a co-production a- greement with a U.S. defense con tractor and use of Israeli gun and missile-control systems on a U.S.- built air frame. The U.S., which is funding much ALL ABOARD NOV. 15 of the Lavi’s cost, has put up about a billion dollars toward its produc tion. The Pentagon said that each plane will cost about $22 million while Israel’s estimate is $15 mil lion. Most of the money goes to American contractors. A group of congressmen headed by Reps. Les Aspin (D-Wis.), chair man of the House Armed Services Committee, and Mel Levine (D- Calif.), a leading member of the House Foreign Affairs Commit tee, protested to Weinberger in mid-July against the Pentagon slowdown in releasing funds ear marked for the Lavi. Referring to the conditions Icenogle mentioned, an aide to Levine said to The Southern Israelite that they were “not appropriate,” and that he was “totally dissatisfied” with the Pen tagon’s position. The group that wrote to Weinberger, the aide said, “will respond in some way to the conditions attached to future co operation with Israel on the Lavi.” Feel Like A Stranger in Synagogue? 633*0551 T)lie dourtyard C^a^e GOURMET RESTAURANT/BAKERY/CATERING || Is Now Open Serving Continental Breakfast 1 Mon.-Sat. from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. I luncheon Mon.-Fri. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. II Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. H Dinners Served Mon.-Sat. 6 p.m. to 10 p.m P Relax and Enjoy Gourmet Cuisine from our Daily Menu FRESH BAKED PASTRIES MADE ON PREMISES 5505 Chamblee-Dunwoody Road/Dunwoody Village 392-9583 Congregation Shearith Israel Invites Prospective Members To An Open House Wine and Cheese Party Shearith Israel 1180 University Dr., N.E.
