Mrs. Morton Wittenberg, of Augusta participated in sessions at the 74th annual meeting of the American Podiatric Medical Asso ciation, held recently in San An tonio. Mr. Wittenberg is first vice pres ident and president-elect in charge of membership for 1986-87 of the American Podiatric Medical Aux iliary. * * * The JWB Book Council has presented its Body-Of-Work Cit ation to Dr. Philip Birnbaum in recognition of a lifetime of work in Jewish culture, language, liturgy and religion. Rena Baranan, daughter of Aaron and Marianne Baranan of Atlanta, has been accepted by Bar- Ilan University, Ramat Gan, Israel, for a one-year American program. The program integrates formal academic course work with infor mal education utilizing the state of Israel as a living text. Miss Baranan graduated from Riverwood High School in June 1984. * * * Joseph I. Lichten, head of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith’s liaison office to the Vati can, has been designated as “Knight Commander of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great" by Pope John Paul II. Atlanta. Sheri will be sharing her Bat Mitzva with Geulah Ghinis of Moscow, U.S.S.R. Dr. Stuart Jay Simon has been appointed a fellow of pulmonary medicine at Yale University Medi cal Center, New Haven, Conn. Dr. Simon is chief resident of internal medicine at Michael Reese Medi cal Center, Chicago. A graduate of the Medical Col lege of Georgia, class of 1983, and Tulane University, 1979, he gradu ated cum laude with a B.A. degree, in sociology and a B.S. degree in biology. Dr. Simon is the son of Susan and Stanley Simon of Macon. Gussie Amsel of Montreal. Nancy Siefert, a recent Tufts University graduate, has been named the New England regional coordinator for the university ser vice department of the American Zionist Youth Foundation. She will be working with college stu dents throughout the New Eng land area organizing cultural events, fairs, regional seminars and lec tures to instill a deeper Jewish and Zionist consciousness in Jewish students. She will also be promot ing study in Israel. Mrs. Siefert, one of eight regional coordinators, is the daughter of Theda and Len Siefert of Atlanta. Grandparents are Joan and Mickey Benamy of Atlanta, and Perrye and Julian Lewis of Mobile, Ala. Micah was given the Hebrew name Moshe Yeeshai in memory of his paternal great-grandfather, Morris Rosenfeld. The bris was performed by Can tor Isaac Ostrofsky, with Rabbi Juda Minsk officiating. Robin and Steve Bennett of Lil burn announce the birth of a son, Jacob Samuel, on July 15. Jacob was given the Hebrew name Shlomo Yakov in memory of his maternal great-great-uncle, Shlomo Goldberg. * * * Ross and Charna Perloe of At lanta announce the birth of a son, David Martin, on July 7. David was given the Hebrew name David Moshe in memory of his paternal and maternal great grandfathers. The bris was performed by Can tor Akiva Ostrovsky. David and Cantor Barbara Margulis of Highland Park, N.J., announce the birth of a son, Louis Gregory, on July 17. Grandparents are Comer Gay of Atlanta and the late Edgar Gay, and Betty and Harry Margulis of Royal Palm Beach, Fla. The bris was performed by Rabbi Rubin at Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick, N.J., where he was given the Hebrew name Elazar Gili. Louis Gregory was named for his great-grandfather, Louis Mar gulis, and his great-grandmother, Georgia Hymes. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shenk of Atlanta announce the birth of a daughter, Tzina Ronit, on July 23. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shenk of Atlanta, and Haz- zan and Mrs. Joseph Wieselman of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Tzina was named in memory of her great-aunt, Sylvia Banner. Dr. Paul B. Weinberg has com pleted his fellowship in pulmonary disease at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital. He is now in private practice in Gwin nett and Forsyth Counties. Dr. Weinberg, his wife and their two children, are returning to At lanta after three years in Chapel Hill, N.C. * * * Atlantans Mike Hessing, Dr. Gerald Kumin, Herman Mitchell and Dr. Barry Warshaw were re cently honored at the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia’s 10th annual awards banquet held in Atlanta. Hessing, medical editor at the Cable News Network, accepted the Norm Weaver Memorial Award for CNN’s efforts in promoting organ donation. Kumin was presented with the Director’s Award for service on behalf of the foundation. He has been chairman of the Medical Ad visory Board for the past two years and serves on the board of direc tors. Through his leadership, the board’s research grants committee was organized to fund kidney dis ease research locally. Kumin is the medical director of the Cobb Coun ty Dialysis Facility. Mitchell, president of Happy Herman’s, was given the founda tion’s President’s Award which goes to an individual or organization that supports the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia through fund-raising efforts. Happy Her man’s has organized and sponsored a wine tasting event, A Taste For Life, for the past two years. The event has raised over $11,000 for the foundation. Warshaw, pediatric nephrologist at the Emory University School ol Medicine, received a Georgia Re search Award and grant monies to continue research into the causes of kidney disease.
