Her persistence paid off recently. Alexander, the first woman to serve with a major Conservative congre gation in the United States, led her first service as assistant rabbi of one of the country’s largest Con servative synagogues, Congregation Adat Ari El in North Hollywood, Calif., in the Los Angeles environs, which has 1,000-plus member-fami lies. Alexander, the daughter of Ger trude and Rabbi Theodore Alex ander, spiritual leader of San Francisco’s Congregation B’nai Emunah, received a Reform ordi nation at the Hebrew Union Col- lege-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York in 1983. She had taken pre-rabbinic courses at the University of Juda ism in Los Angeles, the West Coast branch of the Conservative Jewish Beth Jacob Pre-School Spaces still available call 633-0551 Rabbi Alexander, standing next to a Holocaust Memorial, is the first woman to be placed in a pulpit role by the Conservative Jewish move ment, She led her first Sabbath service on Aug. 2. Theological Seminary of America. When she enrolled there, she knew the ordination of women rabbis “was not something that would happen overnight,” she said in an interview. In fact, the Con servative movement started ordain ing women just last year. “I had to decide if my goal was to be a rabbi or if the time factor was not important and I would wait. Waiting was not an option, but it was important to finish my rab binic education,” she explained. So Alexander enrolled in the Reform HUC, its administration having full knowlege that she ulti mately wanted a Conservative pul pit. Since her ordination, she has directed adult services at the San Diego Jewish Community Center. Her new job in the pulpit, Alex ander related, “is exciting—and it’s scary, too.
