Israeli art exhibit to travel U.S.
by Margie Olster
JTA
— NEW YORK
The largest and most important
exhibit of ancient art of the land of
Israel to ever travel abroad will be
on display at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art in New York from
Sept. 25 through Jan. 4, 1987.
The collection of archaeological
finds dating back to the 11th Millen
nium B.C.E. and covering some
11,000 years, will also be displayed
in the Los Angeles County Museum
of Art from April 9, 1987 to July 5,
1987; and the Houston Museum of
Fine Arts from Oct. 30, 1987
through Jan. 17, 1988.
Among the items included in the
exhibit are two of the Dead Sea
Scrolls, the oldest Hebrew texts of
the Bible ever discovered.
Almost the entire collection
comes from archaeological exca
vations of famous biblical sites in
Israel. Most were uncovered in this
century and none have been exhi
bited outside the country to date.
Dr. Martin Wyle, director of the
Israel Museum in Jerusalem, said
he and his colleagues have planned
the exhibit for 12 years and because
it contains many of the national
treasures of Israel, a copy of each
item has been made. That work
alone took a year, Wyle recently
told a group of Jewish American
leaders gathered here.
The exhibit features finds from
the Byzantine, pre-biblical and
post-biblical eras. Wyle said it is
not a Jewish exhibit, especially
those parts with prehistoric articles.
This is the first major exhibition
which will give Israel international
recognition by being displayed in
the world’s leading museums like
the Met, Wyle said. “I hope this
exhibition will show another
angle—the more normal angle of
Israel, Wyle said.
Michele Cohn Tocci, director of
the American Friends of the Israel
Museum, said the collection is com
plex and can be better appreciated
if the viewers come with some
knowledge. For this reason, the
Met has put out an eight-page
explanation of the history of the
periods and pieces in the exhibit.
A group of young contemporary
Israeli artists will also be mounted
concurrently with this ancient col
lection at the Met, Wyle said.
“Treasures of the Holy Land
Ancient Art from the Israel Mu
seum” contains a historical gamut
of all the archaeological periods
between the 11th millennium B.C.E
and the seventh century A.D. The
exhibit covers the prehistoric era.
the Neolithic period, the Chalcoli-
thic era, the Bronze Age, Canaan-
ite period. Iron Age and the Israe
lite period.
The First and Second Temple
periods and the eras of Babyloni
ans, Greeks and Romans are also
represented in the exhibit.
Some of the prized finds of the
exhibit include the Habbakuk
Commentary, one of the first and
best preserved Dead Sea Scrolls
dating back to the first century
B.C.E. to the first century A.D.
A stone mask found recently at
Nahal Hemar in the Judaen desert
dates back to about 7000 B.C.E.
Ivories from the First Temple
period, pottery and metal from the
Canaanite period and ivory and
pottery figurines from some of the
earliest recorded human settle
ments in the Near East will also be
displayed.
