‘Tisha B’Av Experience’ is 24-hour event
Taryag NCSY and Summer Kollel members gather around the “bonfire.”
by Mark Koffeky
Special io The Southern Israelite
Tisha B’Av was observed in a
unique way by the Taryag-Atlanta
chapter of the National Confer
ence of Synagogue Youth (NCSY)
at Congregation Beth Jacob with
an event titled “The Tisha B’Av
Experience.” Assisted by Rabbi
Benyamin Friedman and the staff
of the Atlanta Summer Kollel, a
full 24-hour program was prepared
to commemorate this special day.
The event was well attended by
members of the Atlanta chapter of
NCSY. Also in attendance were
four members of the Nashville
chapter of NCSY, making it an
inter-chapter event.
“The Tisha B’Av Experience”
was designed to provide a well-
rounded Tisha B’Av to both those
who had observed Tisha B’Av every
year, and those who never had the
opportunity to do so.
The program began at 8:15 p.m.
on Wednesday, Aug. 13, with Min-
cha services. After a short intro
duction on the meaning of Tisha
B’Av provided by chapter adviser,
Rabbi llan Feldman, participants
sat on the floor, the shule was dar
kened, and candles were provided
in accordance with the Halacha of
Tisha B’Av. Following the Ma’ariv
service, the book of Eicha (Lamen
tations) was read by the NCSYers
and Kollel members. The night
concluded with the NCSYers and
congregants from Beth Jacob par
ticipating in a Tisha B’Av bonfire
led by the staff of the Kollel.
Each member of the Kollel pro
vided a story of a different tragedy
that befell the Jewish people on
Tisha B’Av.
The program resumed on Thurs
day, Aug. 14, at 9 a.m. with Shachri
services. After the reading of the
Torah and Haftora readings u-
nique to Tisha B’Av, the recitation
of Kinos was begun. Kinos are spe
cial poems lamenting the many
destructions that the Jews have
gone through, such as the destruc
tion of the Beit Hamikdash (Holy
Temple) in Jerusalem, the expulsion
from Spain, and the Holocaust.
Interspersed among the Kinos, two
movies dealing with the themes of
Tisha B’Av were shown.
The first film, “Ambulance,” was
a nine-minute movie about a group
of Jewish German children being
taken away in an ambulance to the
concentration camps. The second
film was “Image Before My Eyes,”
an hour-long film dealing with the
rise and fall of Polish Jewry from
1920 to 1945.
After a break, the participants
gathered again at 4:30 p.m. to learn
the section of the Talmud in Trac
tate Gittin dealing with the des
truction of Jerusalem. Afterward
Rabbi Friedman led a discussion
group on the two movies that were
seen earlier that day. Following the
discussion, the Mincha and Ma’a
riv services were recited, the Koffsky
family hosted a break-the-fast meal
to end the program.
The Taryag-Atlanta chapter of
NCSY is affiliated with Congrega
tion Beth Jacob, and is open to
Jewish teens, grades eight to 12.
