Holocaust survivors to say
thank you’ at N.Y. reunion
Several thousand Jewish survi
vors of the Holocaust and their
families from across the country
will gather at the Statue of Liberty
Sunday, Sept. 7 “to thank America
for providing them with a home
and haven.”
A group of Atlantans will attend
the ceremonies, including Cantor
Isaac and Betty Goodfriend, Lola
and Rubin Lansky, Karen and
Andy Edlin, Harold and Helen
Hersch and daughter Nica, Alex
Gross and Ben and Sylvia Gross.
At a news conference, Benjamin
Meed, president of the American
Gathering and Federation of Jew
ish Holocaust Survivors, said the
Liberty Island ceremonies, to be
followed by a reunion and dinner
that evening at the Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel, would celebrate “40 years of
a new life.”
The American Gathering and
Federation represents 55,000 Jew
ish Holocaust survivors in the U.S.
and is co-sponsoring the Sept. 7
program with HIAS, the world
wide immigration and resettlement
agency.
Robert L. Israeloff, president of
HIAS, told of his organization’s
pride at being instrumental 40 years

Emory lecturers complete
Holocaust study in Israel
Two lecturers on the Holocaust
at Emory University were among
32 students from the United States,
Canada, West Germany and Aus
tralia who have just completed the
Summer Institute on the Holocaust,
conducted by the Center for Teach
ing the Holocaust of Jerusalem’s
Yad Vashem(Martyrs’ and Heroes’
Remembrance Authority) and the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s
Vidal Sassoon International Cen
ter for the Study of Anti-Semitism.
The two, Bill Kostelec and Mi
chael Lodahl, will teach a course
on the Holocaust this coming aca
demic year at Emory. Both have
completed doctoral programs in
religious studies this year at Emory
and went to Jerusalem to study
with the top people in the field of
Holocaust studies. Lodahl found
the seminar “a unique opportunity
to be with Jewish scholars who can
speak with such authority and clar
ity.” The attraction of studying in
Jerusalem also was a great factor,
said Lodahl.
Kostelec noted that this fall will
be the first time that the course on
the Holocaust will be offered at
Emory every semester, due to a
growing interest in the subject.

Statue of Liberty program, begin
ning at 11:30 a.m., which will in
clude performances of patriotic
American compositions and Yid
dish music by the 100-member U.S.
Army Band and Choir, Meed said.
A high-ranking administration offi
cial is expected to address the
gathering, he added.
The “Liberty Reunion” will be
the first to be held in New York,
according to Meed. The first inter
national gathering took place in
Jerusalem in 1981, followed by a
1983 reunion in Washington. A
dinner in the grand ballroom of the
Waldorf-Astoria, with some 1,200
people in attendance, will conclude
the day’s activities.
Elie Wiesel, chairman of the
United States Holocaust Memor
ial Council, will address the dinner.
In addition. Meed said, the Ameri
can Gathering and Federation will
honor Claude Lanzmann, whose
award-winning film “Shoah” fea
tured interviews with Holocaust
survivors, and sculptor Natan Rap-
oport, himself a Holocaust survi
vor. Rapoport’s sculpture of an
American soldier carrying a Holo
caust survivor, titled “Liberation,”
is situated in Liberty Park on the
New Jersey shore facing the Statue
of Liberty.

Holocaust of Yad Vashem and the
Hebrew University is conducted
each July and encompasses lec
tures dealing with various aspects
of the Holocaust: the period prior
to its occurrence, the years of the
Holocaust itself and the aftermath.
There are also two study groups in
which the students participate. One
is on Teaching of the Holocaust,
designed primarily for educators
actively involved in teaching youths
or adults in formal or informal set
tings about the Holocaust. The
other group, on Studies in Anti-
Semitism, is directed toward com
munity leaders, clergy and inter

The group studying this year
included college students, profes
sors of history and theology, high
school teachers, officials of Holo
caust research or historical centers,
and synagogue school teachers and
administrators. Ten participants
were non-Jews.
Sponsors of the program, in
addition to Yad Vashem and the
Vidal Sassoon Center, are the
Rothberg School for Overseas Stu
