Rep. Larry Smith (D-Fla.), a senior member of the House For eign Affairs Committee, said (to this reporter), “How many times are they going to re-examine the relations between the U.S. and Israel. Almost everybody agrees the relationship is fairly well insti tutionalized. The purpose of the articles is somehow to discredit that relationship.” He noted that three-fourths of the House of Rep resentatives is “committed to strong support of Israel. “What is to be gained by this sort \fopOUNT HOTELS. When was the last time anyone read four pages in the Washington Post on relations with England and West Germany. It’s the same old story. There are some who want to prevent the (U.S.-Israel) relationship from get ting stronger or permanent and indeed are intent to weaken it.” As to the contention in the arti cles that next to funding for Israel, the mark of a congressman’s sup port for Israel is opposition to U.S. arms going to Arab countries (Egypt excepted). Smith said, “There are an enormous number of reasons for the denial of sales to Jordan and the Saudis that they (the arti cles) don’t discuss except for a passing sentence that the Saudis are paying the PLO and financing Syria. They chalk that up to the pro-lsrael lobby and Congress but suffocate the balanced approach they claim to make. They mention only in passing that the strategic cooperation is successful.” David Brody, Washington repre sentative of the Anti-Defamation League, who recalled he was inter viewed by Charles Babcock (author of the Post series), said: “I don’t know what prompted the Post nor what its motivation is. The fact is that the series has nothing start- ingly new in it. The pro-Arabs don’t need this series to make charges against a pro-Israel lobby. They’ve been doing it for years. The major point is that Israel is recognized strictly for what it is in terms of U.S. interests. Most Amer icans feel that way about it. Ameri cans feel the strong democratic relations with Israel and that it is the only country in that part of the world the U.S. can count on as an ally.” Robert Satloff, of the Washing ton Institute for Near East Policy, Patronize our Advertisers they help bring you The Southern Israelite said, “There is frustration in lots of minds about foreign aid. The Post series gives them a handle.” Satloff pointed to a “sea change in U.S policy in the Middle East” that “can’t hide the build-up of a virtual alliance.” In saying “Israel is the structural victor in the bureacratic battle going on,” Satloff noted the comment in the articles that Secre tary of State George Shultz is establishing U.S. relations with Is rael so that the next secretary of state can’t do anything about it.” Satloff added that “pro-Israelis are beginning to win without a fight. They have the psychological advan tage that is different from the situa tion 10 years ago. There is a fun damental change in that.” M.J. Rosenberg, former editor of the Near East Report and now the Washington representative of the American Jewish Committee, said, “The Post’s articles convey an over-emphasis on the role the pro- Israel lobby rather than on the administration’s view that Israel is a natural ally of the United States. This recognition by the administra tion—the first administration to see that Israel is an unambiguous U.S. asset—is why there’s support with the help of the lobby for close U.S. relations with Israel. “The underlying tone of the ser ies is somewhat unfriendly because it focuses on the pro-Israel lobby rather than on the administration’s realization of Israel’s value to U.S. interests,” Rosenberg added. “The impression given is that there are many pro-Israel people in the ad ministration and Congress that have bought the lobby’s line and the heat was put on them. In Ronald Reagan’s second term, he doesn’t have any political reason to be pro- Israel. The Reagan administration is reading reality and the reality is Israel is our only reliable ally in the Middle East. Furthermore, Israel’s Prime Minister Shimon Peres and the national unity government have satisfied the administration because they did work to lick inflation and have taken a moderate approach for peace with their Arab neigh bors.” JAGUAR "Over 35 Years Experience” I offer all my new Jaguar customers... • Free loaner while your new Troncalli Jaguar is serviced • 4 years free oil changes (limit 12) • Saturday Service • 24-hour emergency road service • Over 35 years experience at Atlanta's oldest Jaguar dealer Nobody but nobody ever underleases or undersells me' ' 1 v ■ * VM III 1625 Church St., Decatur, GA 30033 Irving Silver Salesman of the Year 1985 Fleet Manager Sales & Leasing Personal sales of over $ 51,000,000 Days: 292-3853 Night: 392*9587
