Georgia’s influence far exceeded
its size at the 110th B’nai B’rith
District Five Convention held in
Orlando, Fla. last month. District
Five is composed of all Atlantic
coast states from Maryland to
Florida, plus Washington, D.C.
The highlight of the convention for
the Georgia delegation was Jerry
Sugarman’s election to the National
BBYO Commission.
Also honored were A.J. Kravtin
and Steve Levetan, who were asked
to give nominating speeches for
two of the three candidates for
third vice president of the District.
This position is considered most
important since the officer is in line
for the presidency.
In an unprecedented move, Stuart
Langer, one of the delegation's
youngest members, was asked by a

District past president to second
his nomination for international
vice president.
Georgia’s members and lodges
came away from the convention
with a host of awards: Kehillah
Lodge’s Steve Levetan was named
outstanding young leader in the
District; Kehillah president Harold
Cohen was named outstanding
lodge president while Doug Ross
of Achim Lodge was an honorable
mention in the category; outstand
ing Ben B’rith went to A.J. Krav
tin; and past president of the State
Association, Max Olim, received a
special presidential citation for his
work in assisting lodges outside
Atlanta.
Herb Wollner, Naehal president,
accepted the award for the Dis
trict’s largest percentage gain in
membership. The Leo M. Frank
Lodge won a trio of honors: out
standing lodge project; honorable
mention for outstanding lodge; and
a special presidential citation.
The State Association was rec
ognized for its leadership devel
opment program and won the “fa
vorite son" competition by raising
the highest percentage of funds
beyond a stated goal, thanks in
large part to the fundraising efforts
of Ron Chanin and Richard Sol
omon. Kehillah Lodge’s contribu
tion of $1,800 at the convention
put Georgia “over the top” to take
first place in the category.
Georgians played key roles
throughout the convention. Fred
Broder gave a well-received moti
vational speech. Incoming District
president Bernie Friedman accorded
Arnold Ellison, honorary District
executive vice president, the honor
of performing the presidential in
stallation.
Kurt Homburger, Ron Stein.
Herb Wollner and David Diamond
were involved in convention com
mittees. Jack and Sherry Passoff
accepted the charter for the new
Solel Unit. Jerry Shure, District
Five auditor, helped interpret the
budgetary process and assisted the
state’s election caucus.
Dr. William Wexler, formerly of
Savannah and now living in Israel,
was honored by the convention.
Wexler is a past District president
and the only person from District
Five to become president of B’nai
B’rith International.
