A special welcoming ceremony
for the new Jewish cadets was held
last month at the West Point Jew
ish Chapel. Well-wishers, commu
nity members and representatives
of the Jewish War Veterans were in
attendance. Each new Jewish cadet
was presented with an inscribed
edition of the Siddur for Jewish
Personnel in the Armed Forces.
The Class of 1990’s Jewish mem
bers consist of 18 men and four
women. The majority, 13, are from
New York, New Jersey and Mas
sachusetts. Four are from Califor
nia, four from the South and one is
from the Midwest.
“The Jewish Chapel greatly en
hances the lives of the Jewish cadets
and community at West Point,”
said Herbert Ames, president of
the West Point Jewish Chapel Fund.
One of the original intentions of
the chapel, Ames said, “was to
provide a religious home that serves
to welcome members of the Jewish
faith to West Point.
The chapel is cited as a signifi
cant factor for the growing number
of Jewish cadets at West Point.”
Halpern’s ‘team’ to manage
Epstein School move in ’87
As a record number of students
began the 1986-87 school year,
Gary Synder, president of the Ep
stein School, announced the lead
ership team working on the move
to Underwood Hills Elementary
School. The Ahavath Achim Syn
agogue has been home to the school
since its inception in 1972. In the
fall of 1987, the school will relocate
in Sandy Springs.
Chairing this major move in the
school’s history is Jack Halpern.
The next nine months will be spent
in setting plans in motion for the
physical changes needed in the new
building, a smooth transition from
the synagogue and an expanded
enrollment for the 1987-88 school
year.
Halpern will have the following
team working with him. David
Kuniansky and Larry Wolfe will
assume responsibility for the Build
ing and Grounds Committee; Peter
Aranson and John Miller will chair
the Budget Committee; Sol Singer
will chair the Inter-Agency Rela
tions Committee working with the
Ahavath Achim Synagogue, Atlan
ta Jewish Federation and Fulton
County; Sherry Frank will chair
the Publicity Committee; the Fund
raising Committee chairpersons
will be announced soon.
Halpern has invited all Epstein
School parents and friends to help
in the historic move. He said, “We
have been given an opportunity to
make a significant contribution to
the quality of our children’s educa
tion and to the future of Jewish
education in Atlanta.”
To volunteer, call Jack Halpern
(451-0318, work) or (255-0129,
home), the committee chairs, the
school staff or board.
More Jewish plebes
to enter West Point
WEST POINT (JTA)—Twen
ty-two Jewish men and women are
entering the United States Military
Academy at West Point as members
of the Class of 1990. This is the
largest number of Jewish cadets to
enter a single class since World
War II.
At that time, from 1940 to 1945,
there was an average of 100 Jewish
cadets of a total number of 2,200
cadets each year. At present, there
are 4,500 cadets. Of this total, there
are 58 Jews, including the 22 cadets
of the Class of 1990, at West Point.
