AJF once again participates
in Adopt-A-School program
The Atlanta Jewish Federation
has participated in the Atlanta
Public School’s Adopt-A-School
Program for a second year, with a
more comprehensive program, ac
cording to Betty R Jacobson,
Federation president.
The two-week day camp pro
gram, initiated last year, in which
the Federation “adopted” students
from the Fowler Street Elementary
School, was well received and bene
ficial to the students. “The Federa
tion project has become a model
for other organizations and busi
nesses participating in the Atlanta
Public School’s Adopt-A-School
program,” said Dr. Lowrie A.
Fraser, program coordinator for
Adopt-A-School.
The Federation program involves
pairing volunteer teenage tutors
with fourth, fifth and sixth grade
Fowler Street students in an educa
tional and recreational environ
ment. The Fowler Street students
received tutoring in reading and
mathematic skills, and also partici
pated in typical day camp activities
including arts and crafts, swimming,
boating, fishing and athletics. The
students’ skills and imagination
were put to use in two special pro
jects: creating a newspaper and
producing a radio program.
Marty Ellen chats with Fowler Street School student.
Twenty-five Fowler Street stu
dents and 12 volunteer tutors par
ticipated in this year’s program.
Gwendolyn Mayfield, principal of
the Fowler Street school, helped
prepare the educational curriculum.
The program took place at the
Atlanta Jewish Community Cen
ter’s Camp AJECOMCE, located
at the Zaban Branch in Dunwoody,
Monday-Friday, August 11-15 and
