The two-week day camp pro gram, initiated last year, in which the Federation “adopted” students from the Fowler Street Elementary School, was well received and bene ficial to the students. “The Federa tion project has become a model for other organizations and busi nesses participating in the Atlanta Public School’s Adopt-A-School program,” said Dr. Lowrie A. Fraser, program coordinator for Adopt-A-School. The Federation program involves pairing volunteer teenage tutors with fourth, fifth and sixth grade Fowler Street students in an educa tional and recreational environ ment. The Fowler Street students received tutoring in reading and mathematic skills, and also partici pated in typical day camp activities including arts and crafts, swimming, boating, fishing and athletics. The students’ skills and imagination were put to use in two special pro jects: creating a newspaper and producing a radio program. Marty Ellen chats with Fowler Street School student. Twenty-five Fowler Street stu dents and 12 volunteer tutors par ticipated in this year’s program. Gwendolyn Mayfield, principal of the Fowler Street school, helped prepare the educational curriculum. The program was planned and organized by the Federation Community Re lations Committee’s Urban Affairs Subcommittee, and was funded by the Federation. Volunteers who participated in the program include Matt Berke, Jeff Dudovitz, Brian and Michael Gilner, Loren Kletzky, Michael Leavey, Leanna London, Rachel Popowcer, Steven Schwartz, Monica Selmonosky, Joel Silver- man and Brad Zweig. The Atlanta Public School’s Adopt-A-School program is ad ministered by the Atlanta Partner ship of Business and Education. According to Dr. Fraser, there are currently more than 150 business and religious organizations involved in the program. The Federation plans to expand the summer program into a year- round relationship with the Fowler Street students, according to Marty Ellen, chairman of the Urban Af fairs Committee.
