Lauterburg, devel oper of magnetic resonance imaging as a tool for medical diagnosis and research, was honored with the Henrii ta Szold Award of Hadassah. The award was presented reccntlv at Hadassah’s 72nd National 1 a- vention. The Henrietta Szold Award is presented annually to indi viduals whose lives and work reflect the humanitarian values of Hadassah’s founder. Previous recipients include writer Elie Wiesel, United Nations Ambas sador Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, Soviet “refusnik” and exile Ida Nudel, former Israel President Yitzhak Navon, President Harry S Truman and Israel Prime Ministers David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir. Linda E. Fleishman of Greens boro, N.C., a member of the na tional board, was elected a national vice president of Hadassah at the organization’s 72nd national con vention held recently in Miami Beach. Mrs. Fleishman is a former president of the Southern Seaboard Region of Hadassah. Mrs. Fleishman serves as liaison to the national organization depart ment; is a member of the Task For ces for the national membership department; national major gifts department and for the national leadership development depart ment. A 1985 graduate of Lakeside High School, Israel is an interna tional studies and economics major and will be a sophomore at Emory University this fall. He is the son of Firooz and Gigi Israel of Atlanta. The Bar Mitzva of Adam Harold Kulbersh of Dunwoody will take place at 10a.m. Satur day, Sept. 13, at Temple E- manu-El. A congregational kid dush will follow. Adam is the son of Amy and Bill Kulbersh. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Kul bersh of Lauderhill, Fla., and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brown- stein of Clarksdale, Miss. Great-grandmothers are Mrs. Sinai Brownstein of Greenville, Miss., and Mrs. Herman Dams- ker of Clarksdale. Herbert Katzi, assistant secre tary of the Joint Distribution Committee, was honored for 50 years service at a reception held recently at the JDC headquarters in New York. Ralph Goldman, executive vice president, presented Katzir with a nickel, silver and pyrex menorah by artist Ludwig Wolpert. The Bat Mitzva of Rebecca Eve Lutz of Dunwoody will take place at 9:15 a.m. Satur day, Sept. 13, at West End Syn agogue in Nashville, Tenn. A kiddush luncheon will follow. Rebecca is the daughter of Rosanne and Harry S. Lutz. Grandparents are Myer and Sally Spector of Milton, Mass., and Harry and Helene Lutz of Albany, Ga. Middle East specialist Gail Ripans of Atlanta will again teach the annual Middle East Update at Oglethorpe University beginning Tuesday evening Sept. 23 through Oct. 21. Topics include the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism, terrorism, fluc tuations in oil prices, the peace process, the Lebanese civil war and U.S. and U.S.S.R. involvement in the region. The Bat Mitzva of Angie Welch of Atlanta will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Ahavath Achim Synagogue. A congregational kiddush will follow. Angie is the daughter of Solo- mon and Adrienne Cohen. Grandparents are Merton Levin and Eleanor Levin, both of Atlanta. Great-grandparents are Ada Miller of Atlanta, and the late Dave Miller and the late Larry and Selma Levin. Maury Shapiro, co-adviser of Frank Fierman AZA, was chosen as 1985-86 AZA Adviser of the Year. He has been an adviser for four years and has been active at BBYO events, adviser workshops, and at the AJCC on Sundays. While he was in high school, he was a member of Frank Fierman AZA. He is employed by the Equitable Financial Services. The Bat Mitzva of Michelle Eileen Herzfeld of Atlanta will take place at 8:30 a.m. Satur day, Sept. 13, at Congregation Shearith Israel. A congregation al kiddush will follow. Michelle is the daughter of Susan G. Herzfeld and Bennett B. Herzfeld. She is the grand daughter of Mrs. Lorna Huie of Atlanta and the late Louis Greene and Mrs. Lillian C. Herzfeld of Miami Beach and the late Max Herzfeld. Mater nal great-grandmother is Mrs. Jack Goldberg of Miami Beach. The Board of Directors of Ampal-American Israel Corp. has elected Michael Arnon president and chief executive officer. Arnon replaces Ephraim Reiner, whose resignation from all positions he held in the Ampal group was ac cepted by the board. * * * Newcomers Bonnie and Steve Pepper of Marietta announce the birth of a son, Scott Chad, on Aug. 17.
