Bat mitzva returns to Torah
to observe 50th anniversary
Marilyn and Herb Gerber with Rabbi Leonard Lifshen.
On Saturday morning. Sept. 6. at
Congregation Beth Shalom, Mari
lyn and Herb Gerber will have an
aliyah (call to the Torah) to cele
brate the 50th anniversary of her
bat mitzva.
Beth Shalom is a Conservative
synagogue that includes women in
the minyan and encourages women
to read from the Torah.
Mrs. Gerber remembers being in
the first hat mitzva class—Sept. 7,
1936—at Beth Tfilah Congrega
tion in Baltimore. She said, “As an
Orthodox congregation, girls were
not allowed to read from the Torah
and a bat mitzva was unheard of.
However, eight young girls studied
with the rabbi and prepared a spe
cial program of reading which cul
minated in a group bat mitzva
when the girls were 12.
“When l had my first aliyah a
year-and-a-half ago at Beth Sha
lom l was moved to tears, it was
such an emotional experience.
Having had a Hebrew education, l
could actually follow the reading
in the Torah for the first time.”
The community is invited to join
in Shabbat services and celebrate
with the Gerbers.
Services begin at 8 p.m. Friday
and 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
The synagogue is located at 3147
Chamblee-Tucker and Alton roads,
Chamblee. For further information,
call the synagogue office at 458-
0489.
