According to the Jewish calendar,
Sept. 5 is the beginning of Elul, the
last month of the year. It means
that 30 days from this day is Rosh
Hashana and 40 days is Yom Ha-
Kippurim. The entire month is
considered a time of asking for
mercy and forgiveness and to pre
pare ourselves for the High Holy
Days: To be prepared for the Days
of Judgment, we begin to do our
“Cheshbon-Nefesh” and the con
clusion of making an account of
our deeds in the last year. This
month was chosen because on the
first of Elul, Moses went back to
Mount Sinai to get the second set
of tablets after G-d forgave the
children of Israel for the sin of the
golden calf.
Elul is the month of Selichot—
special penitential prayers: The
Sephardic Jews initiate the reciting

of “Selichot” through-out the entire
month. Ashkenazi Jews start from
the Saturday night prior to Rosh
Hashana, no fewer than four days
before Rosh Hashana. There are
those who begin the Selichot at
midnight. A famoust motif in Israel
that I saw in traditional neighbor
hoods in Jerusalem and other pla
ces is the “shamas” of the syn
agogue who goes from door to
door to awaken those who pray to
hurry and come to recite the Seli
chot prayers. I remember also see
ing children and parents walking
when there was still darkness to
Selichot services; and obviously
there are those who prefer to say
the Selichot prayers near the “West
ern Wall.”
The purpose of the Selichot is to
ask for forgiveness and to prepare
for the Day of Judgment. We are
looking for the accounting of the
year. We want to repent for what
we did and to improve ourselves
for the next year. There are two
kinds of sins: Between us and the
Almighty and between us and other
human beings. To awaken those
who are sleeping in our hearts,
there is the tradition of blowing the
shofar every morning until Rosh
Hashana.
Even though most of us are not
observant Jews, 1 think that from
the time of Elul the month of the
Selichot is a very good time to ask
ourselves: What are we doing for
our Jewish identity? How are we
educating our children? What are
we doing to know and come closer
to our new-old homeland? Did we
visit Israel enough? Do we spend
enough time enjoying and studying
our heritage? Our Hebrew lan
guage?
These questions are appropriate
for Jews all year, but especially in
these 40 days. Do we value these
questions, and are we honest with
our answers?
