Obituaries
Rabbi Goodman of Columbus’ Temple Israel
Rabbi Alfred L. Goodman, 68,
of Columbus, Ga., died Monday
Sept. 1. For more than 30 years he
had been spiritual leader of Tem
ple Israel in Columbus.
Funeral was held Thursday, Sept.
4 i at Temple Israel in Columbus.
Officiating were Rabbi Edward
Chesman of Temple Israel, Rabbi
Richard Eisenberg of Shearith Is
rael in Columbus, and Rabbi Elihu
Schagrin, rabbi emeritus of Tem
ple Concord in Binghamton, N.Y.
Rabbi Goodman was ordained
in 1945 at Hebrew Union College-
jewish Institute of Religion
(HUC-JIR) in New York City, and
he received an honorary doctorate
from that college in 1970. During
World War II he served as a chap
lain in the United States Air Force.
From 1950-1983 he was rabbi at
Temple Israel. He retired in April
1983.
For the past year, he was part
time spiritual leader of Temple
Beth David in Gwinnett County.
He was a past president of the
Southeast Association of Reform
Rabbis, past recording secretary of
the Central Conference of Ameri
can Rabbis, and at the time of his
death he was treasurer of the Na
tional Association of Retired
Reform Rabbis.
Rabbi Goodman was a leader in
community relations. He led

1960s with a minimum of upheav
al. He was instrumental in cement-

Survivors include his wife, Rayna
Goodman; sons. Glen Goodman
of Athens, Ga., and Rabbi Stephen
Goodman of Garden City, N.Y.;
daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Cohn of
Marietta; sisters, Gertrude Apple,
Rose Schwartz and Joyce Landau,
all of Cleveland, Ohio; brother.
Dr. David Goodman of Cleveland;
and one grandson.

Alfred Marschall
Alfred Marschall, 86, of Hal
landale, Fla., died Thursday, Aug.
28.
He was the brother of Mrs.
Alfred (Use) Braun and uncle of
Mrs. Brenda Graiser, both of At
lanta.
Funeral service was held Friday,
Aug. 29, in Hallandale.
Other survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Hilma Marschall; son, Claude
Marschall of Geneva, Switzerland;
and one grandson.
TEL AVIV (JTA)-Fini Leiters-
dorf, 82, the doyenne of Israel’s
fashion designers, died Sunday,
Aug. 31. She drowned while swim
ming in the garden pool at the
home of her architect son, Toni, in
Savyon.

yahu Tuesday, Sept. 2. The Hun-

Mrs. Lena Gershcow Garnett of
Delray Beach, Fla., a native of
Atlanta, died Monday, Sept. I.
Funeral service will be held
Sunday, Sept. 7, in Delray Beach.
Survivors include her husband,
Milton Garnett; sons, Dr. Robert
Garnett of Columbus, Ga., and
Dr. Stephen Garnett of Israel;
sisters, Hattie Hirsch of Lauderdale
Lakes, Fla., and Sara Weinberg of
Atlanta; and four grandchildren.
garian-born Leitersdorf was the
widow of artist Yohanan Simon.
She began working in Tel Aviv in
1940 and designed theater costumes,
dresses, men’s wear, shoes, jewelry
and buttons. An exhibition of her
designs was held in the Tel Aviv
Museum two years ago.
Leitersdorfs best-known work
is probably the desert coat she
designed for the Maskit folk art
shops 30 years ago and which has
remained a steady seller ever since.
Kuker Unveiling
The unveiling ceremony of Dora
E. Kuker will take place at 1:30
p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Crest
Lawn Memorial Park, with Rabbi
Judah Kogen officiating.
