The most important community
event on behalf of Soviet Jewry for
this year will take place at 7:30
p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at The
Temple. This Simchat Torah Rally
for Soviet Jews will bring together
the Jewish community; political
leadership at the federal, state and
local levels; religious and business
leaders from Atlanta in a display of
solidarity for the 2.5 million Jews
of the Soviet Union.
The rally will represent our
community’s public statement to
President Reagan that the issue of
Soviet Jewry must be raised force
fully with Mr. Gorbachev at all
levels of United States/Russian
relations. A massive petition drive
munity and statewide dignitaries,
members of synagogues, temples,
organizations, agencies, youth
launched in September will culmi- , groups and members from the com-
nate with thousands of signatures. munity-at-large will be brought to-
Letters written to Reagan by com- gether and “mailed” at the rally.
Recent Atlanta visitors to refus-
niks in the Soviet Union will share
their experiences. Children from
the Jewish community will partici
pate in song and collective state
ment. The entire program will be
video-taped and copies sent to the
president to show him the extent of
this community’s support for Soviet
Jewry.
The rally is sponsored by the
Worldwide Jewish Affairs Subcom
mittee of the Federation’s Com
munity Relations Committee. Rally
chairpersons are Raida and Mar
tin Reish. Jack Horowitz is the
chairman of Worldwide Jewish Af
fairs.
For further information, contact
Noah Levine at the Federation,
873-1661. The rally is free and
open to the public.
Representation expands at AJF
with board of trustees members
As part of a continuing effort to
broaden community representation
on the board, four new institu
tional trustee positions have been
added to the Atlanta Jewish Fed
eration’s board of trustees. An
amendment to the Federation’s by
laws requires that four presidents
from among Jewish agencies and
organizations in Atlanta not cur
rently represented be selected to
serve on the board The Federa
tion’s nominating committee will
review candidates for the position
and make recommendations to the
board yearly. “These new positions
