ZOA to hear Zimmerman
on Israel, American Jewry
The Atlanta District of the Zion
ist Organization of America will
launch a series of luncheon forums
for the local community at noon
Friday, Sept. 12, at the Atlanta
Jewish Community Center on
Peachtree. Harriet Zimmerman will
speak on “Israel and American
Jewry, A Path to the Future?”
Mrs. Zimmerman is well known
for her outstanding leadership in
Jewish and civic organizations.
Nationally, she serves as vice
chairman of the United Jewish
Appeal (USA), is on the national
board of the United Israel Appeal
and the Joint Distribution Com
mittee (Executive Committee), and
is a vice president of American-
Israel Public Affairs committee
(A1PAC).
Harriet Zimmerman
She recently attended the Jewish
Agency Assembly in Jerusalem
which centered around the dispute
on who determines how the funds
raised by Keren Kayesod-USA are
spent and administered and “who
should have the say: those who
raise the funds, so-called non-Zion
ists, or those who live in Israel, or
all active Zionists.” The discussions
were very heated because of lack of
mutual understanding compounded
by the different forms of decision
making style—Israeli vs. American.
Mrs. Zimmerman will discuss
some of the heat and light stem
ming from the critical Assembly of
the Jewish leaders from Israel and
America.
A kosher luncheon will be served
at a cost of $4.50. Reservations can
be made by calling the ZOA office,
874-3018, or 266-9845, by noon
Monday, Sept. 8. The public is
invited.
Concert turns into a donnybrook
by Tamar Levy
GENEVA (JTA)—A concert here
by a popular Saudi Arabian singer,
rescheduled because of a row over
the fact it was to take place at a
Jewish-owned hotel, degenerated
into a drunken brawl between the
young Arab spectators.
The concert by Mohamed Abdou,
with seats priced at $500, was to
have been held at the Noga Hilton
Hotel.
The event was the brainchild of
an Egyptian impresario who viewed
it as an opportunity to attract the
many wealthy tourists from Saudi
Arabia and other Persian Gulf
states spending the summer in
Geneva.
When members of the Saudi
royal family staying here learned
that the hotel to be used for the
concert was owned by Jewish bus
inessman Nissim Gaon, they raised
objections and the event was trans
ferred to the Intercontinental Hotel.
Intercontinental officials were
only too pleased at the prospect of a
fresh source of income to make up
for the shortfall of American tour
ists this year and Arabs who chose
to stay home because of falling oil
prices.
Their satisfaction was shortlived.
Young Kuwaitis attending the con
cert after downing a few drinks
started a brawl with a group from
Saudi Arabia. The concert was
quickly transformed into a donny
brook, with tables, chairs and
glasses flying in all directions.
Bodyguards, quickly overwhelmed
by the fray, called in police and
order was restored at the hotel.
