Yeshiva University to celebrate
centennial with year-long events
United States Secretary of Edu
cation Dr. William J. Bennett will
be the keynote speaker at Yeshiva
University’s Centennial Convoca
tion, Thursday, Sept. 18, at its
Main Center in Manhattan.
Dr. Norman Lamm, president
of the university, will confer upon
Dr. Bennett an honorary Doctor
of Humane Letters degree and also
deliver a major Centennial Address
titled “The Next Hundred Years.”
The university—America’s old
est and largest under Jewish aus
pices—dates its founding from
the establishment of Yeshiva Etz
Chaim, a small school on the Lower
East Side of Manhattan, on Sept.
15, 1886. That school later merged
with the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan
Theological Seminary, and the uni
versity grew out of that merger.
Presidents and representatives
from major universities through
out the nation will be present at the
convocation.
This academic year also marks
Dr. Lamm’s 10th anniversary as
president of the university. Dr.
Lamm, third president of the insti
tution, is the first to have been
born in America.
The convocation marks the be
ginning of a year-long series of
special events.
On Sept. 23, the U.S. Postal
Services will host a ceremony at
the university’s Midtown Center,
245 Lexington Avenue (at 35th
Street). The ceremony, which will
begin at 11 a.m., will mark the
issuance of the stamp honoring the
late Dr. Bernard Revel, first presi
dent of the institution.
The stamp will be issued in the
“Great American” series, which
also has honored such luminaries
as Harry S Truman and Pearl S.
Buck, the author.
Dr. Revel, who died in 1940,
would have been 101 years old
