Harriet Zimmerman to lead celebrations of Israel’s 40th Harriet Zimmerman, president of the National Women’s Division of the United Jewish Appeal and a UJA national vice chairman, has been named chairman of the UJA Celebration of Israel’s 40th Anni versary. Martin F. Stein, national chair man of UJA, announced the ap pointment. He said Mrs. Zimmer man will plan and carry out a series of celebrations which “symbolize the state of Israel to the American Jewish community.” Mrs. Zimmerman was national chairman of the UJA Women’s Division before becoming its pres ident. She serves on the board of directors of the Atlanta Jewish Federation and has headed the Atlanta Women’s Campaign for the UJA. Harriet Zimmerman She is a vice president of the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee and serves on the exec utive committee of the American AJF’s young leaders plan ’87 kick-off event The Young Leadership Council (YLC) of the Atlanta Jewish Fed eration will hold a kick-off event at the Standard Club on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 8:30 p.m. The evening will be an opportunity for individ uals between the ages of 25 and 39 to meet and socialize, learn about the YLC and become involved in committee activities. Cost for the event, which will include refresh ments and live music, is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The newly created YLC is de signed to appeal to the broad range of interests of Young Jewish adults with an emphasis on education, leadership development, campaign and outreach. The group, co-chaired by Lynne Halpern and Shiel Edlin, is led by a team of dedicated and experienced volunteers: Lois Ku- niansky and Michael Plasker, co- chairmen, programming; Maxine Rouben and David Halpern, co- chairmen, outreach; Anita Stein and Robyn Greenwald, co-chair men, communications; Willy Spiz- man and Michael Jacobson, co- chairmen, men’s campaign; and Jane Lefco and Carolyn Oppen- heimer, co-chairmen, women’s campaign. National ZOA convention to focus on Israel, America The 85th National Zionist Organization of America Conven tion will take place at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel in Baltimore on Sept. 25-28. According to Rabbi S. Robert Ichay, president of the Atlanta dis trict, the convention will feature presentations by Ambassador of Israel Meier Rosenne, Richard Strauss, Editor of Mid-Eastern Policy Survey; Morris Abram, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations; Arnaud De Borchgrave, editor-in-chief, Wash ington Times; Rabbi Joseph P. Sternstein, president of JNF and past-president of ZOA; Jacques Torczyner, president of World Council of General Zionists; Leon Dulzin, chairman of WZO and the Jewish Agency; and other national and international leaders. The Thursday evening opening plenary session will feature the renowned Metropolitan Opera singer, Misah Raitzin, who will entertain with renditions of ope ratic, Russian and Israeli selections. Full emphasis will be given to clarifying the relationship between Israel and America and the future role of ZOA throughout the world. She is a delegate to the Jewish Agency Assembly and is a member of the board of the Set tlement Study Center in Rehovot, Israel. She was coordinator of the Middle East Policy Committee in Boston from 1973 to 1975, national director of Jewish Community Liaison for the Carter-Mondale Campaign in 1976, and a member of the National Council on the Humanities from 1978 to 1984. She is a member of the Round Table of the Georgetown Center for Strategic and International Studies. As a UJA national vice chair man, Mrs. Zimmerman will take part in developing policies and programs for one of the most suc cessful fund-raising organizations in the world.
