AJCC, community to honor
Sadie Sacks at reception
Sadie Sacks with Purim king and queen.
When Sadie Sacks joined the
staff of the Atlanta Jewish Com
munity Center in 1949 as director
of the nursery school and teacher,
there were three staff members and
an enrollment of 25 children. Now,
37 years later, when she retired on
Aug. 31, the Early Childhood De
partment staff numbers over 50
and there are 430 children.
In honor of Mrs. Sacks’ 37 years
of outstanding service, the AJCC
will hold a reception from 6:45 to
7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at
the AJCC/Peachtree.
As the need for extended early
childhood services grew, Mrs. Sacks
implemented many different pro
grams to answer that need. She
created the Fun Day program,
later expanding it to the Tri-day
program, and was responsible for
establishing the kindergarten pro
gram. In addition, she established
an all-day preschool program at
Peachtree and began the extended-
day program. At Zaban Mrs. Sacks
started the Kid Care program and
in Cobb County initiated a Moth
ers’ Morning Out service, as well as
extending preschool programming
to that area. She assisted in the
designs of the Peachtree and Zaban
preschool facilities.
Mrs. Sacks’ involvement in early
childhood education extends be
yond the AJCC. She has served as
an officer in the Georgia chapter of
the National Association for the
Education of Young Children and
was its conference chairman in
1972. A member of the Governor’s
Advisory Committee on Day Care
Licensing Regulations, she also co
ordinated the Council of Jewish
Child Care. She has published
articles in Pedagogic Reporter and
as director; Eva Stern, immediate
Chai-lights.
Mrs. Sacks and her husband,
Ralph, are avid Hawks fans and
never miss a game. Music lovers,
the couple attend all Atlanta Sym
phony concerts.
Though Mrs. Sacks has retired,
she will serve as a consultant for
the AJCC. Next year she will be
involved in the design of the Blum-
enthal preschool facility in Cobb
County, the development of full-
day care at Zaban and the training
of staff and the design of pro
gramming for the Early Childhood
Department.
The community is invited to join
in honoring Mrs. Sacks. Esther
Lewyn, who preceded Mrs. Sacks
past chairman of the Early Child
hood Services Committee; and Jack
Freedman AJCC president, will
take part in the program. Several
staff members will make presenta
tions.
