Thousands of Jewish Holocaust
survivors, gathered at the - foot of
the Statue of Liberty “to thank
America for providing us with a
haven and a home,” turned their
thoughts Sept. 7 to the latest vic
tims of anti-Semitism: the 21 Jew
ish worshippers murdered at prayer
in the great synagogue of Istanbul,
Turkey.
Benjamin Meed, president of the
American Gathering/ Federation of
Jewish Holocaust Survivors, who
chaired the ceremonies, told some
5,000 persons standing under a
cloudless sky: “We are shocked
and outraged by the murder of our
brothers in Turkey who died dav-
ening, without any chance of de
fending themselves. Last week an
American plane was hijacked and

“We call today upon the leaders
of the free world to find ways to
combat and stop these murderous
acts, before it is too late. Will we
allow history to repeat itself? Let
our voices be heard today, loud
and clear: Never again!”
At a dinner attended by some
1,500 survivors who packed the
grand ballroom of the Waldorf-
Astoria that night, Elie Wiesel,
chairman of the United States
Holocaust Memorial Council,
called for “universal condemnation
and retaliation.”
He added: “The reaction must
come not only from the Jewish
people but from everybody. If not,
what happens to Jews will hap
pen—as it is already happening in
the case of hijack victims—to all
peoples.” Wiesel suggested that a
similarity exists between recent
terrorist actions and Nazi persecu
tion of Jews.
“Whenever our enemies attack
us,” he said, “they begin by attack
ing the synagogue.”
In a message read to the Statue
of Liberty gathering by John O.
Marsh, secretary of the Army,
President Reagan told the Holo
caust survivors:
“Your presence reminds us just
how important it is to remain true
to our ideals as individuals and as a
nation. You also exemplify the
resilience of the human spirit.

celebration and raise your glass, I
join you enthusiastically in declar
ing, ‘L’chaim!’”
The celebration marked the 40th
anniversary of the arrival in the
United States of the first Holo
caust survivors under the 1946
Truman Act.
Robert L. Israeloff, president of
HI AS—co-sponsor of the day’s
events—told the survivors: “Your
courage and tenacity are shining
examples to all who have found
promise and new life in America.
Our country must thank you for
making America even greater, even
stronger. The survivors are a clear
reminder to the world that despite
the very worst that the barbarians
and the totalitarians of the world
could do to try to eliminate the Jew
ish people, they have failed.
“Through your presence, you
personify the invincibility and the
indestructible spirit of our people.
The story of your arrival and your
accomplishments during these past
40 years that so inspired and up
lifted us today underscores the
importance of preserving the Unit
ed States as a haven of freedom
and opportunity for all.”
The U.S. Army Band and Cho
rus, which—along with American
patriotic songs—thrilled the crowd
with renditions of Jewish songs.
The band played “Afn Pripitchik”
and “Adon Olam,” and the chorus,
accompanied by the band, sang
“Jerusalem of Gold”—in Hebrew.
Cantor Isaac Goodfriend of Atlanta
was a soloist with the band. Speak
ers included Shoshona Cardin,
president of the Council of Jewish
Federations; Sam E. Bloch, senior
vice president of the American
Gathering; and Vladka Meed,
chairperson of the Gathering’s Cul
tural Committee.
At the Statue of Liberty and at
the Waldorf-Astoria, the pennons
of II U.S. Army units that liber
ated Nazi concentration camps were
carried by present-day members of
those units. “Guardian of Remem
