Hyman Bookbinder, special rep
resentative of the American Jewish
Committee, was named an Honored
American recently for his “out
standing contribution to the Amer
ican Way and his pride in his ethnic
heritage.”
Bookbinder was among 18 A-
mericans cited by “Americans by
Choice,” at the Ethnic American
Day celebration at DAR Constitu
tion Hall. Besides his association
with the American Jewish Com
mittee, Bookbinder has served as
executive officer of the President’s
Task Force on Poverty, and Assist
ant Director of the Office of Eco
nomic Opportunity.
Tommy P. Baer, of Richmond,
Va., senior partner of the law firm
of Baer & Neblett, has been named
to the board of directors of HI AS,
the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.
Baer is an international vice-
president of B’nai B’rith and is
vice-chairman of the International
Membership Cabinet, and a trus
tee of the B’nai B’rith Foundation
of the U.S. On a local level he
serves as chairman of the B’nai
B’rith District Five Leadership
Cabinet, and as president of the
Rimmon-Dominion Lodge. He was
the recipient of the agency’s 1985
Outstanding District Committee
Chairman Award.

Rabbi Shalom Lewis of Con
gregation Etz Chaim will be speaker
at the Annual Airport Chaplaincy
Luncheon to be held at the Airport
Marriot Hotel on Monday, Oct. 4.
The purpose of the luncheon is
to bring together people of various
religious backgrounds and com
mercial enterprises who are inter
ested in the Hartsfield Atlanta In
ternational Airport.

David Franklin Cooper recently
received his juris doctor degree
from the Duke University School
of Law. His undergraduate degree,
bachelor of art degree in history,
was obtained from the University
of Texas. Cooper is associated with
the law firm of Hyatt and Rhoads
in Atlanta.
He is the son of Jean and Jerome
Cooper of Atlanta.
Jack and Rose Miller, who will celebrate their 60th wedding
anniversary Thursday, Oct. 9. Above, they dance the “Polka” at
the recent wedding of their granddaughter, Ann Miller.
Long time residents of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Miller live at the
Jewish Tower and are involved in many Jewish activities, including
the senior citizens program at the AJCC.
Mark Codner of Atlanta, a senior
at Emory Medical School, was
selected for an externship in surgery
at Cornell Medical Center in New
York City.
He is married to the former Jane
Beth Hoffman of Charleston, S.C.

Colo., has been promoted to medi
cal specialist sales representative
for Harris/Lanier Voice Products
Division in Denver. She has been
with Lanier for nine months.
She is the daughter of Hershal
and Ethel Cenker of Atlanta.
Suri Duitch, 17, of Colorado
Springs, Co., and Brian Hafter, 18,
of Millbrae, Calif., have been
elected presidents of the B’nai
B’rith Youth Organization’s (BBYO)
girls and boys divisions at the
BBYO annual International Con
vention held at the B’nai B’rith
Perlman Camp in Starlight, Pa .
More than 400 delegates from
the United States, Canada, Great
Britain, Spain, France, Belgium
and Israel attended the six-day
meeting.

Thomas R. Pickering, the Uni
ted States ambassador to Israel,
will be the keynote speaker at the
American Friends of Haifa Uni
versity’s 15th annual dinner on
Oct. 15, in New York.
Pickering was previously am
bassador to El Savador, Nigeria
and Jordan, was part of the Amer
ican diplomatic team at the Gen
eva Diarmament Conference, and
served as special assistant to the
secretary of state.

Cynthia and Howard Lessinger
of Atlanta announce the birth of a
daughter, Karin Paige, on Aug. 29.
Grandparents are Regine and
John Rosenfelder, and Dorothy
and Robert Lessinger, all of At
lanta. Great-grandparents are Sally
and Abe Nyssenkorn, and Sophie
Goff, all of Atlanta.
Karin was named in memory of
her maternal great-uncle, Kurt
Rosenfelder, and given the Hebrew
name Chana Perl, in memory of
her maternal great-great-uncle,
Charles Rose.

name Eliezer after his maternal
great-grandfather, Louis Goodman.

nounce the birth of a son, Matthew
Ross, on Aug. 28.

Raymond Kahn of Columbus, Ohio,

Matthew was given the Hebrew
name Moshe Carmel in memory of
his great-grandmother. Rose Git-
