Say ‘yes’ to Epstein School Yes is what the Epstein School board members are hoping will be said when they ask for donations at the school's annual telethon on Sunday, Sept. 28. Get a head start Kabbi Schneerson Adapted from the works of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, the I.ubavitcher Rcbbc. by Rabbi Yossi New , Chabad of Georgia The famous teaching of the Baal Shem Tov, founder of Chassidism, is that from every thing one sees or hears one must learn a lesson and derive guidance and directive for our life’s conduct. What can we learn from Rosh Hashana in gen eral, and particularly from a Rosh Hashana which falls on Shabbat. The expression Rosh Hashana has two meanings, “beginning of the year” and “head of the year.” The second meaning, “head of the year,” indicates the parallel to the role of the head -as the center of intelligence—in leading and con trolling the body. In the same way there is one day in the year which “heads” and leads the year—and that day is Rosh Hashana. In prac tical terms this means that just as the head leads the entire body, so must one’s Rosh Hashana resolu tions (to conduct oneself in accor dance with Torah and mitzvot in daily life) “head” and inspire every day of his life for that entire year. What does Shabbat add to this picture? Two of the lessons from Shabbat are: • Shabbat emphasizes that the A-mighty is Master of the entire world and everything therefore ul timately depends upon Him alone. • Shabbat tells us not to be overly preoccupied with labor but to devote ourselves to Torah and mitzvot. A Rosh Hashana which falls on Shabbat must arouse us to make a wholehearted resolution to conduct ourselves in a “Sabbath-like manner” during this entire year which, in practical terms, means to bear in mind that in every time, in every place, and in every undertak ing, the A-mightv alone is in con trol. Secondly, we are to be con stantly mindful of our obligation to connect the mundane weekdays with the spirit of Shabbat, an idea reflected by the wording of the “Psalm of the day” (at the conclu sion of the morning prayers). We declare on Sunday, “Today is the first day of Shabbat, etc. ...’ on Monday we say, “...Today is the second day of Shabbat, etc. ...,” rather than, “Today is the first day of the week,” etc. Every weekday is in this manner connected with the Shabbat, teaching us that every thing—no matter how mundane or “weekday”—must be transformed into a mitzva-concern, a spiritual matter. As we are taught in Proverbs, “Know Him (G-d) in all your ways;" in all your ways (i.e. in the physical areas of life, eating, drinking, etc.) we are to recognize and connect ourselves with G-d. When we accept this goal and principle with a whole heart, G-d help us to implement it in our lives in the course of the year.
